The rumors of a new, C8-generation Corvette electric hybrid have taken wings once again based on some spy photographs that have many folks scratching their heads. The photos in question depict a fully-camouflaged C8 with all sorts of electrical contraptions attached to it, and upon a closer look and through the process of elimination and deductive reasoning, a few conclusions could reasonably be drawn from the totality of the evidence at hand.

Torrid Hybrid

According to a couple of sources including Motor Trend, the next C8 Generation ZR-1 will be producing 900 hp from a twin-turbo V8 along with 2 electric motors in an AWD format and won’t be ready before 2023. This would be the first-ever Corvette with AWD, but may or may not be the first electrified Corvette.

The car in the photos does not appear to be an AWD vehicle since the front wheels are not driven. It is entirely possible for Chevy to be testing the hybrid powertrain components for the ZR-1 but it does seem a bit too early for that. Also, it does not appear to be carrying many aerodynamic or performance upgrades that would be conducive to a test mule for an ultra-high-performance Corvette such as the ZR-1.

Choices, Choices

Another and more likely explanation would suggest that Chevrolet is working on a hybrid vehicle that would sit above the internal combustion engine powered Stingray but below the ZR-1. The C8 chassis has plenty of space down the middle of the floor of the vehicle which would house the embedded battery, and also help lower the center of gravity and not take up any usable space from other components. There is much speculation as to the powertrain setup and output, but there is no real consensus on these presently so we will have to wait quite a bit longer it seems, what with the industry shutdown and all.

Different Strokes

The C8 generation Corvette family is likely to spawn several other capable and fun variants. We are glad Chevy is not resting on its laurels with the Corvette, and are excited about this gift that keeps on giving. Stay tuned for details.
