For the first-ever Subaru WRX, without being under the name Impreza, it was popular for being a high-performance ride. It was similar to the Impreza in that it had a large output, firm suspension, and low ride height. Yet, some specs were different and unique to this WRX model, which was born in 2014.

The original WRX model features a new 2.0-liter FA20F engine, which has direct injection and a twin-scroll turbocharger. Unlike the Impreza models, where the engine sat on the right side of the car, the WRX model fit the engine to the front of the car, which helps to reduce the car's center of gravity. Hence, it offers excellent off-boost efficiency as well as a wide torque peak.
