For years, Bugatti has tried to add new models to their current two car lineup. Back in 2015, the French car manufacturer cancelled plans to build the Bugatti Atlantic, a two-door, front-mid-engine beauty that nearly made it to market. Earlier this month, Alexandra Mary Hirschi, aka Supercar Blondie, took viewers through a tour of the incredible vehicle that never was.
Big Changes
In many ways, the Bugatti Atlantic was designed to buck tradition. The model forgoes the French automaker’s rear mid-engine layout for a front mid-engine design. Furthermore, the Chiron’s W16 engine was also set to be replaced by either a twin-turbocharged V8 or an all-electric powertrain with four electric motors. Bugatti would have also used parts from their owners, the Volkswagen Group, to keep the price of the vehicle down.
Tradition In Design
While there are obvious changes to parts of Bugatti’s tradition, the Atlantic was designed to pay homage to the famed Type 57. It features a centerline that streaks through the modern-day Atlantic. The car also sports beautiful butterfly doors that make an instant visual impact and a trick rear hatch.
What Happened?
Unfortunately for the gorgeous Atlantic, outside forces stopped it from ever making to to production. Bugatti was developing the vehicle when Volkswagen’s Dieselgate scandal came to light, and it forced the company to stop plans for production. Judging from Supercar Blondie’s video, it looks like the car was about ready to roll off the block, so maybe one day the project will be revived. For now however, we’re left with the video below.
