What is it that calls our attention to a particular vehicle? Is it the sound it makes as it bounds down the road or highway? Rumbling and shaking the ground beneath our feet ever so powerfully? Or maybe it’s the way it looks when it does pass us by, either in traffic or as we walk down a lonely street.

At times, a vehicle can simply be idling by the roadside or even just be parked, resting before the next drive, but still it grasps our attention as we pass it by and the simple sight of it causes us to stop in our tracks and stare in disbelief at the wonder of its design or the modification at the hands of some mechanical genius.

Whatever the case, there are, in fact, some pretty cool cars out there that have been modified and catch our attention and maybe even have us spitting out our cereal in shock—should we happen to be chowing down on a bowl of Cheerios, that is.

In this case, we’ve got quite a few pictures of some pickup and SUV modifications that’ll have you spitting out the grains and oats of your favorite brand of cereal, as some of these mods are in fact pretty cool to behold, even the simpler ones.

So, let’s take a look at some of these epic mods and please, try to keep your composure, as it’s pretty hard to clean cereal off of a computer screen.

24 OUT OF THIS WORLD

via creativethriftshop.com

And of course, there are many projects that go a little, shall we say, overboard, if you know what we mean. Well, if you get a load of this picture here, we're sure you catch our drift. We can more than understand the modification of a vehicle for the sake of improving its performance or functionality (or even it's aesthetic value) but changing the configuration of a vehicle "just because" is maybe taking things a little too far, especially when there's no valid reason for it. Mechanically, it shows incredible skill, but what's it all for, really, other than shock value?

23 HUMMER IMPROVEMENT

VIA car modification

Hummers are pretty spectacular vehicles to begin with. They have been built for years with the promise of execution and performance. What else was to be expected from a vehicle that was made to serve the military, though? Many famous actors helped bring Hummers to the minds of the masses and there are many that are grateful for their work and dedication to bringing the truck to the legal streets, so to speak. Yet there are those out there, as well, that feel the need to modify even the most perfect of SUVs!

22 LOW RIDING IN A JEEP

VIA Big Boy Toyz

As far as SUVs are concerned, Jeep has had the lead in that department for many years. Let's face it, Jeep makes a pretty good vehicle—and a trustworthy one at that. Able to navigate many terrains and surfaces, there are many that have trusted the name and its vehicles for many long years and why not? Jeeps have also been prone to modifications, however, taking an already strong vehicle and making it pretty much unstoppable. Sounds like a preview for the next superhero film, doesn't it? Hardly, but a modified Jeep is nonetheless a force not to be reckoned with.

21 STILTS?!

VIA Car Reviews

Stilts? Hardly. But a pretty incredible mod, if you ask us. Actually, this particular modification came to fruition because of an expedition to the South Pole, so we more than understand the need for the heightened clearance from ground level, thinking of all that ice and sludge that the vehicle must have needed to go through. It's a pretty impressive build, if you ask us, and a well thought-out design. The caterpillar tracks are a pretty cool addition and would make traveling on snowy or icy terrain much simpler than with standard wheels. Hence the tracks on some snow plows that you may see clearing your streets.

20 WILD, WILD WEST!

VIA ZerCustoms

Hey, to each his or her own. But maybe—just maybe—the wild west should be reserved for old Hollywood sets and the back pages of an old Elmore Leonard novel. The addition of wagon wheels to a hummer is interesting, yes, but does it really lend a technological advancement of importance to the vehicle in question? We don't think so, but at the same time, it definitely looks pretty cool. But if we held all of our opinions strictly up to how good something looks, would we ever achieve anything great? Deep thoughts, indeed.

19 A LITTLE DAB'LL DO YA

VIA hiveminer.com

Most of the time, mechanicals concern us not a hitch when it comes to incredible eye-popping modifications. Sometimes, a little paint goes a long way towards getting that cereal-spitting reaction we look for when showing someone our vehicle, at least if it's a vehicle we want to shock people with. And paint. Yes, even a little dab or dollop will do the trick in the end, especially if properly executed and designed, a great paint job can take your vehicle from plain to just plain spectacular in the blink of an eye. We've got a few examples of these in this list, so keep scrolling.

18 DOWN LOW

VIA WallpaperUP

Perhaps there is no other modification that impresses us more than the lowrider. Indeed, lowrider culture has been impressing many automotive enthusiasts for generations and the technologies sprung forth in recent years have improved the vehicles being modified incredibly, all to take some of the classic pickups from history and completely transform them into vehicles that have no problem playing a decent round of the famous Limbo game! We have quite a few decent mods in this category in the following entries to come, as well.

17 WON'T BE BREAKING THE BANK HERE

VIA Blue Fossil Body Works

And it won't always take the bulk of your paycheck to apply the modifications you want to your vehicle. As it turns out, sometimes the most eye-catching paint-jobs out there aren't all that expensive to achieve. Case in point, the above photo. If your SUV or pickup is as strong or powerful as you're content with and all you want to add is a simple coat of paint to catch the eyes of passersby, then a little dab'll do ya, indeed. And it won't empty your pockets in the process, all the while turning a few heads.

16 LOW AND BLUE

VIA alt_driver

Here's yet another example of a great lowrider build that takes the pickup to another level. Or perhaps we should say, "Lowers it to another level." Okay, enough with the dad jokes, but we can't say with enough enthusiasm how incredible lowrider builds and modifications are, mechanically speaking, and let's face it aesthetically, as well. The truck pictured here is a cool build and there are indeed so many others that take the lowrider, in general, to new heights. And yes, we see the obvious joke in that last statement, but we'll spare you.

15 TAKING A BEAST TO THE NEXT LEVEL

VIA powersteering.info

Now, bear with us, please. We totally understand how this one might look to all of you. Essentially, it's just a wee bit of spray paint at the end of the day, but let us direct your attention to the wonder that is the Dodge Ramcharger pictured here. Indeed. Sometimes, a truck like this doesn't need much in the realm of additions or modifications, because sometimes, friends, the company gets it right, and in the case of the Ramcharger, Dodge definitely got the recipe right. The truck itself can be completely white and simple and still turn heads when you see it bounding down the road, so, you'll forgive us the cheap paint on this one, we're sure.

14 A HERO'S VEHICLE

via TINT N WRAPS inc /youtube

And staying with the whole Ramcharger for a second longer here (we're sure you're still bearing with us), if the vehicle wasn't impressive enough to begin with, the 1979 Ramcharger pictured here was featured in one of iconic martial artist and action star Chuck Norris's epic films: Lone Wolf McQuade. In the film, the title character, played by Norris, is actually submerged alive under pounds and pounds of dirt. But the bad guys made one fatal mistake, they buried him in his truck, his Ramcharger. The scene is incredible, to say the least, with Norris roaring at the top of his lungs as he drives straight up out of the ground.

13 MONSTER WHEELS

VIA AutoInfluence

Who isn't obsessed with monster trucks? Perhaps everybody that loves the churning of a combustion engine has, at one time, appreciated the immensity of the good old-fashioned monster truck. Seeing it work and crush all those vehicles at shows is indeed something to see. Perhaps it is the ultimate showing of the power of a giant vehicle that does it, and perhaps for some, it is the suggestion of the mechanics involved in creating such a mighty beast. Regardless, many have been inspired to turn their regular pickups and SUVs into monster trucks of their very own, as we can see here.

12 READY FOR ANYTHING?

VIA gearmoose.com

Sometimes the most amazing and impressive vehicles come from the factory already pretty impressive, as we've already alluded to so far in this article. And sometimes there are special series that are released for the reason of showing how far certain companies can take their designs. Whichever the reason or cause, many of these vehicles turn heads almost every day, and for very good reason. This particular vehicle pictured here, the Knight XV by Conquest Vehicles, comes ready-made, and let's be honest, no modifications needed here. This vehicle looks like it's ready to go through anything.

11 ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT

VIA Pinterest

We've seen what kind of mod-jobs can come from great vehicles that have a solid starting point, so let's take a look at vehicles that can be modified that are lagging from the get-go. Let's be honest, the Silverado can definitely fit in this mold. It's not at all one of the best pickups out there, so we can say that there's definitely room for improvement, and many owners and mechanics have risen to the challenge, as we can see in this picture. Sometimes, a lagging vehicle is the best project to attempt to modify, as there are many ways to go and many things to add that were probably missing from the start.

10 IS THAT A KIA?!

via skigeorgia.ge

Indeed it is, and a Sorento of all things. This build here is definitely pretty cool, and we're not just saying so for the obvious reasons. It's made for cold weather, particularly for skiing weather. Hence the skis mounted at the top of the SUV. The caterpillar tracks are made for easy travel across snowy terrains and this would be the epic vehicle needed to transport avid skiers to the tops of the many slopes around the world. This is definitely a useful mod, if you ask us, and one that is likely to turn quite a few heads, at that.

9 EDGY

VIA CarBuzz

There are indeed a lot of pictures on the internet. (Wow! If there was ever a vague enough statement, we're sure that would take the cake.) But we are trying to make a point, so bear with us, please. As it turns out, there are so many pictures out there, it's often difficult to determine fact from fiction. Case in point, this vehicle here—a highly customized Ford F-550 that will run you many millions of dollars. But as is the case with a lot of these photos, we have to hope the vehicle is as good as it looks.

8 SIMPLICITY AT ITS BEST

VIA Barrett-Jackson

And sometimes, the best designs are the simplest. Basic approaches to design and aesthetics can go a long way and promote a vehicle in its best, and barest, of forms. Showcasing your vehicle with simple colors and functional accouterments can be the best mods at times, and by the way, still turn quite a few heads along the way. Besides, at the end of the day, a gearhead knows what it takes to take a vehicle from factory settings to an impressively modded beast, even if it isn't flashy.

7 IS THAT A HUMMER OR A LAMBO?!

VIA Barrett-Jackson

We've seen quite a few cool mod-jobs in this article, so far, and this one is pretty interesting, to say the least. Generally speaking, Hummers shouldn't have doors like this, as they are more common with Lamborghinis. But I don't think we'll be going back in time to the 90s with this one here. Although it is pretty impressive for the people responsible for this mod to have applied these doors to a beast like a Hummer, of all things. It's like combining something sleek and fast with something bulky and powerful.

6 ANY CHANGE WILL DO

VIA Barrett-Jackson

At the end of the day, any old change or modification that can be done to a vehicle is enough to set it apart from the mold, thus acquiring anyone who has applied the changes a bit of attention for their labors. And if you ask us, the attention is deserved. It takes a lot of work and time to change a vehicle's looks and mechanics and we applaud all who attempt builds like these, even when they don't come out all that great. It's the trying that matters in the end, isn't it? It sure is, and we love looking at these images and these attempts, and we hope you do, too, dear readers.

5 RE-BUILT "FORD TOUGH"

via Pinterest

When it comes to being tough, no automotive company has the right to claim the title more than the company that brought us the incomparable F-Series. Now, whether you like Ford or not, the F-Series is hard to beat and you've gotta give them their props. This modification job takes Ford's toughness to another level, however, and the complete reconfiguration, with such radical chassis and suspension upgrades, is enough to make your eyes bulge out of your head. Oh yeah, and maybe spit out your cereal, should you be chomping down on some Fruit Loops.
