People all over the world have developed an infatuation with SUVs and crossovers, with more and more great offerings becoming available seemingly every minute. "Normal" cars are increasingly being killed off or just seemingly forgotten about, and they're replaced with crossover models of a similar size and shape.

As far as North America is concerned, there's a plethora of SUVs and crossovers to choose from, for just about every bank account and taste, from the Hyundai Venue to the Rolls Royce Cullinan. But even with the huge SUV choice, North America is still missing out on some pretty cool offerings sold overseas.

10 Nissan Patrol Nismo

Sure, this big SUV is sold in North America as the Armada. It's not most people's first choice when it comes to full-sizers, as it's pretty outdated. Over in the Middle East, however, the Nissan Patrol is not just a car, it's an institution.

For the longest time, Nissan has offered a Nismo version of this offroader in that market. Take a trip to say, the United Arab Emirates, and these are absolutely everywhere. Aside from its genuine offroad capability, the Patrol is, by comparison to other SUVs, very simple. There's no hybrid powertrain or Terrain Response systems here, just a big, 428 hp naturally aspirated 5.6 liter V8, some Nismo aerodynamics, and a standard automatic transmission.

9 SEAT Tarraco

Onto slightly more conventional SUVs. SEAT has been a subsidiary of Volkswagen since the 90s, and even though there's parts bin sharing, SEAT models are a bit more flamboyant and interesting to look at, and that's exactly the case with the Tarraco.

The Tarraco rides on the Tiguan's platform, but it's a little bit bigger and offers seven seats out of the box. The exterior styling has a bit more flair, especially on the FR trim level (pictured). The Tarraco is cheaper than the Tiguan, and it's somewhat more interesting than the Tiguan thanks to a different chassis tune. Tech is top class, so are the engines, especially the new-for-2021 plug-in hybrid version.

8 Volkswagen T-Roc

Sometimes, it's difficult to understand Volkswagen of America. They used to spend a lot of their money on niche models, and sometimes fail to respond to market demand. While they're gearing up to launch the Taos compact crossover on the continent, they've been offering the arguably far more interesting T-Roc in other markets.

The T-Roc rides on the same platform as the Golf and the upcoming Taos, but it has a more appealing exterior design, thanks to the unique, boxy styling cues, lighting signatures, and slightly sloped roofline. It's more geared towards comfort, but the familiar VW Group engines are still available, and it represents pretty decent value for money.

7 Toyota Land Cruiser 70

The J70 Toyota Land Cruiser was introduced in 1984, to replace the by-then-ancient FJ40. It was slightly more refined and modern than the FJ40, and it sold very well, especially in Africa and the Middle East.

In fact, it sold so well in those markets, you can go into a Toyota dealer in Africa or the Middle East in 2021 and buy a brand new 70 series Land Cruiser. The "new" 70 series Land Cruiser has a slightly more modern engine and a few tiny mod con additions, it's the same truck that you would have been able to buy back in the 1980s, even down to the body styles available. With retro SUVs booming in popularity and Toyota shifting thousands of 4Runners annually, this would be a great entrant into the North American market.

6 Peugeot 3008

This one is more likely to happen than the others, as PSA Peugeot Citroën is now a part of Stellantis, and is considering returning to the US market. Until they do, we can appreciate the latest 3008 and how good of a crossover it really is. Introduced in 2017, and updated for the 2021 model year, the 3008 has lots to offer.

It looks very good on the outside and strikes a perfect balance between comfort and sportiness when you're behind the wheel. Peugeot has also gone to great lengths to make the interior design pop, and it worked surprisingly well. What's more, the 2021 3008 is now available as a plug-in hybrid and, for the first time, with AWD.

5 Škoda Kodiaq

From all of VW Group's MQB A2-based SUVs, the Kodiaq seems to be a favorite of European buyers. In traditional Škoda fashion, it's much bigger than its direct siblings, the Tarraco and Tiguan, but is cheaper than either of them.

But, the lower price doesn't tell the whole story. The Kodiaq doesn't feel like a cheap car in any way, not even on the inside. The recent facelift is crammed full of the latest tech, as well as Škoda's trademark Simply Clever features, and it's now available with the Golf GTI and Octavia RS' 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine.

4 Cupra Formentor

Cupra

We'll let SEAT continue to convince the world that Cupra is a separate brand. However, the Formentor really is a unique model, as you can only get it as a Cupra. Based on the new MQB Evo platform, which also underpins the Mk4 Leon and the Mk8 Golf, the Formentor is a performance crossover with some pretty unique styling.

Performance crossovers are big business over in Europe, so it's easy to see why this is Cupra's flagship model. Up until recently, the Formentor was available with a few 4-cylinder engines and a plug-in hybrid version, but you can now get it with Audi's 2.5-liter 5-cylinder with around 400 hp. Only 7,000 units will be made, and considering that it's apparently really good to drive, it sounds like it would do great in North America.

3 Dacia Duster

Good news! Dacia is a Romanian automaker that, for the past decade or so, has been owned by the Renault Group. They sell their cars all over the world, and the main selling point of every Dacia has always been value for money.

Although prices vary, the Duster is one of the cheapest SUVs currently sold in Europe, and when you compare how much it costs and what you get for the money, it represents great value. The highest trim level looks cool, is available with AWD and while there's no luxury car tech, it has all you could ever need. If you don't go into it expecting premium segment stuff, it's a great car.

2 Ford Puma

Unfortunately, Ford has fallen victim to reviving sports car names just to use them on crossovers, much like Mitsubishi. The new Puma is named after the tiny riotous sports car of the late 90s and early 2000s, although it has now morphed into a small, Fiesta-based crossover.

Considering how big this market is in North America and how Ford basically bailed on almost all of their normal cars to focus on SUVs, the fact that the Puma isn't available in North America is puzzling. It's good value, it looks cool, and being based on the Fiesta, it's pretty fun to drive, especially the ultra-sporty Puma ST.

What if you're after a compact crossover that offers quirky styling and focuses entirely on comfort rather than sportiness or some type of balance between the two. The Citroën C5 Aircross could be right up your alley. That's, if you're in Europe, of course.

It's based on the Peugeot 3008, and it utilizes the same powertrains, although this one is FWD only. Citroën has returned to its quirky approach to design, thanks in part to market demands changing, and the C5 Aircross is a perfect compromise between grown-up SUV and fun-loving, quirky styling cues. The plug-in hybrid version is reportedly very frugal as well.
