If you want to off-road then you need an SUV, but not just any old SUV. A lot of SUVs are useless off-road, but there is no need to worry, there are plenty of rock climbing, mountain driving, go-anywhere SUVs that really are brilliant off-road.
Offroad SUVs are loved by many. From Dakar rally to the Army, there is always a need for them as they keep people moving when the road disappears. Over the years, there have been some absolutely incredible SUVs that are unbeatable when it comes to loose surfaces.
10 Range Rover
The Range Rover is the king of the road. It's a luxury SUV that really can go anywhere and everywhere, whilst being super luxurious. The Range Rover was launched in 1969 as a larger version of the original Land Rover series as well as something that was a bit more usable on the road. It wasn't really intended to be a luxury SUV, but things sure did change.
The 2020 Range Rover is one of the most luxurious cars on sale today, yet it is still awesome off-road. The technology this car has for going off-road is incredible. This car can wade in water almost a meter deep, and it has multiple driving modes for sand, snow, etc.
9 Land Rover Series/Defender
Originally just called the "Land Rover" this SUV was made for the likes of the army. It was made to go anywhere and everywhere, and that's what it did best. This car could easily drive up and down mountains with its lightweight, but sturdy body design. The Series was eventually replaced with the 90/110 models which were then renamed Defender in 1990.
The original Defender ran a long production span from 1983 to 2016. Then in 2019, the new Defender was launched with production commencing in 2020. These things are unstoppable off-road. The Soft-Top version is a great off-roader if you love driving with the top down.
8 Toyota Land Cruiser
The Land Cruiser has been a great off-roader since 1951. It started life as quite a lightweight but capable off-roader, but nowadays it is a huge SUV loved all around the world. The current Land Cruiser has been in production since 2007, so it's pretty old, but it still outruns the majority of SUVs when it comes to going off-road.
By far one of the best Toyota cars ever made. It may not be one of the most luxurious SUVs, but it gets the job done quite nicely and will get you anywhere you need to go.
7 Jeep Wrangler
The Jeep Wrangler isn't just a poser's car, it is a really capable off-roader. It is an SUV that is super simple to fix and has an absolutely massive aftermarket, hence why it is popular with car enthusiasts.
There are many reasons why the Wrangler is the toughest off-roader. It originates from the original Jeep CJ and the early Willy's Jeep used in WW2. The Wrangler is a beastly car, and it's something that should never be underestimated as this thing can go anywhere.
6 Suzuki Jimny
The Jimny was launched in 1970, and it is one of the most simple but effective SUVs ever made. It is a lightweight car and throughout its 50-year history, it has never intended or been made into some fashionable luxury SUV.
The original Jimny had canvas doors during its first years. The current model may have a sat-nav and automatic gearbox options, but this thing is still very much like the old car.
5 Ford Bronco
The Ford Bronco is a much loved SUV that was recently re-introduced to the market since its disappearance in 1996. The latest Bronco is a beauty, both in standard and sport form. Its roots date back to the original Bronco from 1965, a capable yet simple SUV that was very good off-road.
The latest Bronco aims to knock the crown off the Jeep Wrangler in the off-road SUV world. It is very reminiscent of the classic Bronco's with its boxy exterior design and Bronco nameplate grille on the front.
4 Land Rover Discovery
In 1989, Land Rover launched the Discovery, a car that was just as capable as their 90/110 models, cheaper than a Range Rover, and more suited to everyday use. The Discovery is a brilliant off-roader and the choice of many TV shows as a camera car when they go off the tracks.
The Discovery is a legend, just like the Land Rover Series 1 was. It is a big bulky car that nowadays is great for a family. It seats seven and it has a decent-sized trunk. It can also tackle any off-road surface.
3 Mercedes G-Class
Everyone knows the G-Class as the favorite toy of celebs such as Kylie Jenner and Cristiano Ronaldo. Other, perhaps not-so-famous owners include militaries from all around the world. The G-Class, like most of its rivals, started life as a military operations' vehicle, it then caught on with fans and rich people, and it evolved into a big, boxy, and intimidating luxury SUV loved by every mafia in the world.
By far one of the best Mercedes cars ever made and unlike every other Mercedes SUV currently sold, this thing really does work off-road. The 4x4 version isn't just for looks. It can seriously tackle rock climbing, it can go up mountains and drive huge amounts of sand. It can also wade over a meter deep, depending on the model.
2 Mitsubishi Pajero
The Evolution version of this won the Paris Dakar rally twelve times! That is the most of any car ever to enter the Paris-Dakar rally in history, so you just know this SUV is a powerful off-roader. The standard Pajero is a rugged car that was made to rival the likes of the Land Cruiser, and it is very rugged and reliable.
The Pajero was one of the best SUVs of the 2000s era, and it is a shame that next year the production of this legend will end. Next year would also have been the 40th anniversary for this beast. At least it's going out while still on top.
1 Nissan Patrol
The Nissan Patrol is a brilliant SUV that is one of the best luxury SUVs from a non-luxury brand. It was made to rival the Toyota Land Cruiser with production commencing in the very same year as the Land Cruiser, 1951 which is almost seventy years ago. The current V8 Patrol is known as the Armada in the USA or the Infiniti QX80.
The Patrol is a go anywhere SUV that started life as quite a lightweight simple car. It has evolved over time into an off-road legend and is a common sight in areas such as the middle-east where there is a lot of sand.
