The Suzuki Hayabusa has returned for 2022, kickstarting what is planned to be the motorcycle's third generation. While a few essential parts, features, and aspects will carry over from the current model, there will also be upgrades to electronics, chassis, and engine, complete with some entirely new features making their debut.

However, a little bit of the engine's peak power and torque had to be sacrificed in the name of compliance with stricter emission standards, but some mid-range power has been boosted to compensate.

Read on to find out even more about the 2022 Suzuki Hayabusa and what customers have been told to anticipate and expect so far.

Redesigned For Modern Practicality

A powerful engine, chassis upgrades, and modern electronics are all at the forefront of new features for the 2022 model. This coming model year starts the third-generation Hayabusa models, and although Suzuki has not yet set an official dealer release date, they've decided on a $3,800 price increase, giving the new model an $18,599 MSRP.

Further, a new exhaust system, ride-by-wire system, airbox, and ram air system are also planned for the new model. It will also come in three color schemes: Metallic Matte Sword Silver and Candy Daring Red, Pearl Brilliant White and Metallic Matte Stellar Blue, and Glass Sparkle Black and Candy Burnt Gold.

As mentioned before, making this new model compliant with harsher global emissions standards also means improving durability and performance bit by bit, justifying a little bit of a redesign to the chassis and engine. To improve durability, there will be stronger, lower-mass pistons and connecting rods, as well as revised cam profiles. A lot of the parts featured are new for this model, as there will be around 550 new parts.

The subframe of the new model will also weigh a pound a half less than that of the current model thanks to longer rectangular steel tubing, and its fully adjustable suspension units and handlebars that are 12mm closer will offer a smoother ride. The new dashboard features a hybrid of digital and analog features, with the center screen flanked by multiple analog gauges. There will also be an up/down quickshifter and cruise control for the new Hayabusa, as well as updated LED lighting.

High Praise For Engine

When people take the 2022 Suzuki Hayabusa out for a test drive, they tend to give the engine high marks. As mentioned before, the engine had to be tweaked and modified to fit updated global emissions standards, so the engineers decided to have another look at the engine. For a bike that was once the world’s fastest production motorcycle ever built circa 1998-2003, this would be a challenge.

Further, the Hayabusa is more than two decades old. Suzuki did more than drop the GSX1300R tag; they remade the engine's internal components from the ground up. The new model, planned to be Euro 5 compliant, will feature a 1,340cc inline-four engine producing 187.74 hp at 9,700 rpm, as well as 110.6 lb-ft of torque at 7,000 rpm.

Admittedly, the 1,340cc in-line four-cylinder is derived from the 2008 model engine. The lower horsepower and loss of torque are slightly noticeable, though necessary to meet Euro 5 Emission Standards. That said, low-end and mid-range horsepower have been boosted to compensate, which is actually more practical when applied to real-world, daily driving in highways and city streets. Acceleration is also expected to be both quicker and smoother with the new model.

Stats & Specs

This bike boasts some revised specs that are worth looking at. In addition to the engine described above, the 2022 Suzuki Hayabusa will have an O-ring chain for its final drive, a 5.3-gallon fuel capacity, 582-pound dry weight, and a six-speed transmission. Further, its wheelbase will be 58.3 inches, and the rake is planned to be 23.3 degrees.

Control is the name of the game here, as Suzuki has equipped the bike with launch control, ABS, rear-wheel lift control, lean-sensitive traction control, engine brake control, wheelie control, and hill hold control. On top of all that, riders will be able to use a speed limiter to determine a pre-set maximum speed, though they can manually override it if they so choose.

Some Things Never Changed

However, for all the features that were revised for 2022, Suzuki kept a few aspects from previous models to carry over, unchanged. Despite the third-generation label, the bike takes a lot of cues from the second generation of models, even though revised aesthetic and innovative technical changes are present.

The twin-spar aluminum design on the chassis was carried over from the previous model, and the engine is still mounted at the same points as it was previously. The engine itself also showcases the same bore, stroke, and compression measurements, along with the familiar 1,340 cc displacement. Overall dimensions have also not been significantly modified.
