The automotive world is wide and deep offering an array of options for everyone under the sun. But individual tastes often vary leading to a substantial aftermarket devoted to custom tailoring even a non descript grocery hauler into the car of your dreams. My first hot rod, for instance, was a beat up 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 with a tired 351W engine that threw a rod out the side of the block. Out it went, and in went a fresh "Swapped" 351C. While it didn't improve the holes in the floorboards or twisted frame, it sure looked good.

Swaps are one way to cure a lack of motivation as some stock engines just don't produce enough power. This latest swap is a perfect example of the trend with a 1987 C4 Corvette packing a C7-era ZR1's supercharged LS9 engine. Let's check it out.

According to Engine Swap Depot, "[t]his 1987 Corvette is owned by Harold Chapman from Customs and Hot Rods of Andice in Georgetown, Texas. Under the hood sits a supercharged LS9 V8 installed by The Car Shop in Temple, Texas. The motor is bolted to a 4L85E four-speed automatic transmission which sends power to a Hammerhead 12-bolt IRS diff with upgraded axles...[and] Wilwood disc brakes.

But it's the engine here that's the star of the show. Originally built for the range topping C7 ZR1, the LS9 is a 6.2 liter small block fitted with a Roots-type supercharger with four lobe design. The layout has an "integrated charge cooling system that reduces inlet air temperature for maximum performance."

Each motor is hand assembled at the GM Performance Center in Wixom, Michigan, that is made side by side with GM racing motors. Other distinctive qualities of the mill include both big horsepower at high rpm's and low end grunt. This is achieved through a heavy duty, lightweight and balanced bottom end. Likewise, the top end is fully rollerized with an aggressive cam profile.

Finishing out the build is a custom Ridetech suspension system with BF Goodrich Rival S Tires, and 18" × 11" and 18" × 12" Forgeline Monoblock GS1R wheels in a Brushed Bronze finish. The end result is an impressive piece of engineering that keeps the traditional C4 look intact and is definitely a swap to remember. Buckle up.
