Engine swaps aren't uncommon in the automotive world. If you want a turbocharged LS1 V8 mill inside your Nissan 200SX, you can do so. Reasons for engine swaps are different for every car owner, but it usually results to a more competitive car. This is true with Formula Drift champion Fredric Aasbo, who recently had the B58 engine of his Europe-bound Toyota GR Supra swapped with a 2JZ-GTE mill.

Powering Up For European Drift Races

While some aren't happy that latest generation of the Toyota Supra is powered by BMW's B58 turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine, many still feel the Japanese carmaker made the right decision. By the time Toyota wanted to produce a new Supra, they had no inline-six in their engine lineup.

Nonetheless, some Supra drivers swapped the BMW engine with the trusted 2JZ-GTE mill of the fourth-gen sports car. Aasbo's new Toyota GR Supra had this swap implemented by Erik Nilssen (his chief mechanic in Europe) and VTS-Racing Solutions. When dyno'd, this 2JZ-GTE VVTi engine logged 1,036 hp and 1,225 Nm (903 lb.ft).

The 2JZ-GTE s a tried and tested engine that has become a darling among tuners thanks to the fact that it's bottom end can withstand insane amounts of boost; resulting in gobs of horsepower potential. Due to the 2J's stout block, tuners don't need to implement internal engine upgrades – which usually cost money -- to gain a huge surge in output.

For Aasbo 's GR Supra, the massive jump in output and torque is made possible by various modifications; Including a BorgWarner EFR9280 1.01 turbocharger, BC Brian Crower 3.4-liter stroker kit and internals, JE pistons Maxxecu Race ECU and PDM, Jonus-Racing Stage 3 head, Walton Motorsport exhaust manifold, Turbosmart 60-mm wastegate and dump valve.

According to Aasbo, he prefers spool and drivability than peak power figures. That's understandable considering that his GR Supra is a drift machine. Aasbo drives another GR Supra for drift competitions in the U.S. Built by Papadakis Racing, that Supra is insanely powerful as well – its B58 delivers 1,033 hp and 908 lb.-ft. of torque.
