Elon Musk and the team behind Tesla are all about innovation. They have taken the car world by storm by helping to make the electric vehicle revolution more mainstream than ever. Now, many people who once said they would never purchase an EV either seek to own one or already do. This is because the technology for electric vehicles has changed so significantly.

When electric vehicles first started to become semi widely used, they were often thought to be too slow to be fun. People felt that the tradeoff was not worth it in the end. Now, these more modern vehicles are about as fast as anything else on the road. Of course, largely with the exception of supercars. It is still difficult for electric vehicles to achieve those massive speeds, but there is hope.

Since 2016, Tesla has implemented what is known as Ludicrous mode into some of their vehicles. This serves as a way to make their cars even faster than they naturally are. But, can they compete with the fastest of the fast?

We took a look into Tesla Ludicrous Mode to understand the ins and outs of the feature. How fast does it make your car? Which models have it? And, does it cause long-term damage? Here's what we found.

The History Of The Tesla Ludicrous Mode

In terms of the name for this sportier mode of driving, according to findmyelectric.com, the name came from the 1987 movie Spaceballs. This was debuted in 2016 on both the Tesla Model S sedan and the Model X SUV. Up until 2019, the company was very selective about what cars would have ludicrous mode, but now the number of their cars that feature it has grown. The performance vehicles that had it came with a small car badge to demonstrate so.

It should be noted that although ludicrous mode was debuted on the car market in 2016, it was first introduced to the public in 2014. This was accomplished by making a change to the battery pack on the Tesla Model S P90D. They then offered a retrofit of the 2014 P85D at a cost of only $10,000. This was about half of the original price.

The question many people will ask is how much of a difference does ludicrous mode make. Some car companies are known for introducing things that don’t make a great deal of difference to the driver, but this is not one of them. When looking at the Tesla Model S with Ludicrous mode, we see that the ride can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 2.5 seconds.

For people who want even more speed, there is also Ludicrous Plus mode. This will get the car up to 60 miles in only 2.3 seconds, according to AutoTrader. One thing people should be aware of is the fact that too much of a good thing can become a bad one. Overuse of the Tesla Ludicrous mode can cause damage over time. This is called fatigue damage. Drivers could potentially see a decrease in power if they use ludicrous mode too often.

Of course, this feature was designed to be used and to make Tesla performance cars faster, but this should not be used every time you drive.

Tesla is always finding new ways to make the world more environmentally friendly. They have done this with the general use of their cars, they have the Tesla Solar Roof, and now they are showing people that you can have a super-fast car without damaging the earth. Tesla Ludicrous mode is fast, it’s a fun experience, but it should not be used for every trip.

Also, this is not for everyone. Most people who drive Teslas will be more than happy with the standard speeds of their cars. Only those who prefer supercars will find true joy out of this performance feature. Nonetheless, it’s still awesome that Tesla offers something like this to their customers.
