Land Rover needs little to no introduction. Range Rover, on the other hand, is often mistaken for a brand, but in reality, it's just a model in Land Rover’s lineup. Famed for their off-roading capabilities and the luxury offered, Range Rovers have gone from being the old go-anywhere SUV to more of a symbol for the elite.

Because these land barges start from $69,000 and go all the way to over $200,000, they are out of reach for many. The Range topper comes in the form of the SV Autobiography LWB that costs a staggering $211,000! Just shy of a few thousand dollars off the top-spec Bentley Bentayga.

The Range Rover Sport is the smaller and nimbler sibling to the regular Range Rover. With a less expensive price tag, the Sport comes with slightly better dynamics whilst offering similar levels of luxury.

We shall go over the specifics pertaining to the cost and values of a used Range Rover. Depending on the model year, a fairly high mileage Range Rover Sport could easily be a luxury SUV bargain.

Range Rover Sport: A Brief

Range Rovers have always known to be imposing and are pretty much unrivaled when it comes to curb appeal. The design is distinctive but is dated with respect to its competitors who are busy bringing updates almost every year. Aside from the instantly recognizable silhouette, the Range Rover Sport only differs ever so slightly from its luxe sibling. Changes come in the form of a redesigned front and rear end with a different set of taillights. The Range Rover Sport is available in several trims with varying sets of powertrains.

The 2021 Range Rover Sport comes with 5 engine options in total. The offerings range from gasoline and diesel variants to mild hybrids and PHEVs. The least powerful 3.0-liter V6 diesel makes 254 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque. A mild hybrid 3.0-liter turbocharged gasoline V6 is offered in two states of tune. The lower 355 horsepower version can be seen in the SE and HSE models with torque rated at 365 lb-ft. The more powerful version puts out 395 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. This tune is in our regard the sweet spot in the Range Rover Sport lineup.

Moving up the trim ladder you have the P400e plug-in hybrid which makes 398 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque from the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline 4 paired with an electric motor. The P400e can be exclusively driven under electric power for 31 miles which isn’t all that impressive but given the size of the Sport, it’s noteworthy. Top of the line HSE Dynamic and Autobiography gets the 5.0-liter supercharged V8 with 518 horsepower and 461 lb-ft of torque. The range-topping SVR on the other hand gets the same V8 but puts out 575 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of twist.

If you take a look at Range Rovers from a value perspective, they are not the best of investments. The average price paid for a Range Rover regardless of the model is around $110,000. Of all the available models, the Range Rover Sport is widely preferred. The used car market for the Range Rover is split between the facelift and pre-facelift models of which, the pre-facelifts offer the most bargain. In terms of average depreciation, the Range Rover Sport SVR loses the most at $19,500 per year followed by the Autobiography at $12,500, and the Supercharged losing $10,500 per year. This should give an idea of which model year Range Rover to buy. From older models, facelift or not the price drop is larger from the model year 2018 to 2017 than model year 2020 to 2019, due to strong residuals for the first two years.

Taking into account the Porsche Cayenne Turbo, it depreciates at an average rate of 12.5% ($19,000) per year, slightly lower than the Range Rover SVR. However, the SVR loses $27,000 in its first year and the Cayenne Turbo drops $32,000. On top of this, the Cayenne loses another $32,000 in its second year while the SVR only drops by $7,000, meaning the Range Rover holds better value for the first two to three years.

Of course price in the used car market depends largely on model year and miles driven. Taking these into account, most advertisements that offer value are for 2018 or later model years. As listed on Carfax, a 2017 HSE Range Rover Sport can be had for less than $50,000. Considering most owners do opt for the extended warranty, it’s still a bargain given how much car you get for the money. There's another listing that has even more mileage and comes at a price of just over $40,000. If you fancy a Sport SVR there are a couple of 2015 examples on Carfax listed around the $60,000 mark.
