PepsiCo ordered 100 Tesla Semi electric trucks with a range of up to 600 miles.  As part of an ambitious effort to cut greenhouse emissions, the company said it will acquire the first 15 Tesla Semi trucks by the end of 2021.

The Tesla Semi was first showcased in 2017, and the Californian electric vehicle giant has confirmed that the first batch of an order of 100 production-ready semi-trailers will be shipped to customers this year.  In is not apparent which of the trucks will be in this order. While the more affordable version will have a range of 300 miles, there will also be a more expensive model with a range of 600 miles per charge.

Last summer, Tesla CEO Elon Musk told employees in an email that it's time to bring the Tesla Semi to volume production. Most recently, the company announced that the electric truck will go into production this year.

It is unclear how much electric truck production Tesla will achieve this year. But since the announcement of the Tesla Semi in 2017, PepsiCo has placed one of the largest orders of 100 vehicles, though United Parcel Service (UPS) has the largest known order to date, with 125 vehicles. Until today, there was no clear delivery schedule, so it was big news that PepsiCo expects to have new trucks in its fleet by the end of 2021.

Tesla has many customers who have placed large deposits to reserve Tesla Semi electric trucks but have not been given clear delivery times. At its 2017 announcement, the automaker stated that production versions of the class 8 truck with a payload of 36 tons, will have a range of 300 and 600 miles at a price of $ 150,000 and 180,000, respectively.

Tesla has yet to unveil an actual production version or any specs. And for battery technology, 4 years is a long time, so ranges could differ, and possible increase.  Tesla is expected to update the specs of the Tesla Semi during a production version unveiling, which could happen quite soon.
