Jeep has a cult following and a rowdy image thanks to its impeccable off-road prowess. If you know your Jeeps, then the Grand Cherokee must be a familiar name.

Historically, Jeep’s premium midsize SUV has always been at the forefront of impressive off-roading coupled with luxury. Comfort and practicality play an equally important role in the Grand Cherokee as does its capabilities off the beaten path.

A while back, Jeep showcased the 2021 Grand Cherokee in its 7-seater L version. And now, the brand has taken the covers off the two-row model.

The 2022 Grand Cherokee is very much an L without the additional row of seats. However, what does set them apart further is the hybrid and off-road versions available on regular Grand Cherokee. Dubbed 4xe and Trailhawk, these trims add a bit of flavor to the Grand Cherokee lineup with its breadth of abilities.

Jeep has yet to announce the pricing. But, we expect the 2022 Grand Cherokee to be a good few thousand cheaper than the L, which starts from $40,570 and tops out at $64,194.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee comes in 5 trim levels: Laredo, Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, and Summit, The 4xe hybrid setup is available on all but the base Laredo, while the optional V8 is limited to the latter three.

Jeep hasn't messed about with the engines all that much. The options remain similar to its bigger L sibling and the range kicks off with a 3.6-liter V-6 with 293 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Transmission is an 8-speed automatic with rear-wheel drive as standard, however, Jeep offers all-wheel drive as an available option.

Move up the trim ladder and you’re presented with the choice of a 5.7-liter V8. A familiar Stellantis engine, the unit pumps out 357 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. The V8 can only be had with all-wheel drive and makes do with the same 8-speed transmission.

The hybrid powertrain is in a similar setup to the Wrangler 4xe. The combination includes a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four gasoline engine and two electric motors. Combined power output stands at 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet and an electric-only range of 25 miles.

One thing that we’re familiar with the Grand Cherokee is its bold design; not too over the top yet imposing enough. Jeep has kept the idea rolling for yet another year without taking a leap of faith. While the 2022 model year is a complete redesign for the Grand Cherokee, Jeep hasn’t veered off from its styling ethos all that much.

Every bit of the Grand Cherokee's design is polished to look younger, but unmistakably a Jeep. The redesign does bring a fresh look, however, it’s exactly the same as what we saw in the Grand Cherokee L. Compared to its long wheelbase cousin, the regular Grand Cherokee is nearly a foot shorter. Despite not having the extra five inches of wheelbase, the Grand Cherokee, if anything, looks proportionate in this body style.

Another interesting trivia relating to exterior dimensions is the floating pillar design. Not that it stands out as a design highlight, but its presence does provide a sleeker rear profile.

Also, bits like the Trailhawks’ Goodyear all-terrain tires and increased ground clearance are sure to impress a few off-road enthusiasts. Overall, we’d say, the Grand Cherokee has gotten younger and more polished for 2022.

Jeep has taken a bold step with redesigning the interiors. The update was a much-needed exercise considering the previous gen was starting to look a bit dated. The lack of a third-row and the middle-row captain’s chairs are what separates the 2022 Grand Cherokee from its L version.

Otherwise, the interior of the 2022 Grand Cherokee remains similar with the 10.1-inch (8.4-inch as standard) touchscreen display dominating the center stack. The cabin exudes quality and there is no shortage of space. Go up the trim ladder and everything from the speaker surrounds to the dash tops are lined with quality materials, which is expected in a car of this price point.

The base Laredo pretty much offers the essentials. On the upper trims, the Grand Cherokee gets several convenience features like massaging seats, heated seats with multi-zone climate control.

Other interior amenities include a panoramic sunroof, a power rear liftgate, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and ambient lighting. The icing on the cake would be the optional 19-speaker premium McIntosh surround-sound system, which is a treat to your senses.

In terms of safety, the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee gets all the latest driver-assistance technology, including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keeping assist. Other safety features onboard include driver drowsiness detection and night vision alongside automated emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection.
