Very few car brands across the world conjure up emotions like the Italian car brands. Names like Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Lancia. All convey different emotions, but all of them are the same in that they show us what a car is really about. Of those brands, Lancia is sadly no longer what they were, and Maserati has not exactly been through the easiest time in recent years but it is very much looking to put itself firmly back on the map and become a major player once again.

It started with the Maserati MC20, the first supercar of Maserati’s brand new era but the company is going further than that. To appeal to those who want a car that is fast and practical, they have produced the Ghibli which in its current sports sedan form has been around since 2013. Relatively recently, the company showed off the 2022 edition of the car, one of the most striking looking Maserati’s that is currently available on the market. A sedan might not sound like the most exciting car in the world, but remember, this is a Maserati. Something that is very, very special. Let's take a closer look at the 2022 Maserati Ghibli.

Details Behind The 2022 Maserati Ghibli

The Ghibli is a car that Maserati says makes a real statement in the premium sedan segment, that combines a couple-like philosophy with an interior that is second to none. Under the hood of the Ghibli is where the real magic definitely happens though. Maserati has powered the standard version of the car with a twin-turbo V6 petrol engine that can churn out either 350 hp or 430 hp depending on what you choose when you order the car. The V6 was developed in collaboration with Ferrari and indeed is manufactured in Maranello by the Prancing Horse.

That 430 hp is available with the Ghibli S and S Q4, the latter of which has all-wheel drive, whilst Maserati has also gone to the trouble of creating a diesel version of the car that produces 275 hp thanks to its 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel engine. Every version of the Ghibli comes with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission, which is the same transmission that Maserati has used on both the Quattroporte and all of its Levante models. The eight-speed gearbox should allow for a smooth transition through the gears, with Maserati providing a redesigned gear lever for what should be a more intuitive gear control.

A Stunning Exterior Design Of The Ghibli

Of course, one of Maserati’s biggest selling points has always been the designs of their cars and the Ghibli is absolutely no exception. It is certainly an eye-catching design, with a large grille at the front of the car embracing what Maserati calls a shark nose profile, and the charismatic chrome bars and chrome inserts help create a dramatic front appearance. No Maserati design would be complete either without the iconic trident, proudly sitting at the front of the car. The rear of the Ghibli is also something that is very, very eye-catching too.

For the 2022 model, Maserati has come up with quite the elegant rear bumper design. It can often be hard to make the rear of a car stand out but Maserati has certainly done that here. The rear bumper now allows for a much sharper look to the car, and when we move onto the GranSport bumper it is much sportier than giving the car quite an aggressive appearance. Aggression might not sound like something you would associate with a sports sedan but it goes hand in hand with this fantastic-looking machine. This is all about getting Maserati back in the game in the best way possible.

Not The Most Fuel Efficient Machine, Obviously

It's probably not a good idea to buy a Ghibli if you think it is going to win you some mpg awards. Because it sadly won’t, according to Road And Track. A big brute like this is naturally going to be thirsty and the Ghibli in its rear-wheel-drive form can offer around 17 mpg in the city and around 24 mpg when out on the highway. So more often than not you are probably going to want to top up the tank more than you would if you were driving, for example, a Honda Accord. But in a weird way, that’s part of the fun of owning a Maserati.

The beauty of the Ghibli is that it offers a comfortable, spacious and practical alternative to having a sporty car. Whilst you aren’t going to get a lot of fuel mileage out of the car, the interior oozes Italy and is a fantastic place to be and there are plenty of infotainment and connectivity options with a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system and the now obligatory Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and other such features inside. The Ghibli is a brilliant sports sedan that deserves a lot of attention.
