The all-new 2023 Jeep Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L were the center of attention at the New York International Auto Show this year. For starters, Jeep has injected their new Hurricane engines, replacing the big-block V8 with a twin-supercharged inline-six engine, which makes more power and sips less fuel. Despite all that, what got our attention the most is the extended and super-stretched wheelbase length of an already large SUV.

Even with the extended wheelbase, the Wagoneer L is still shorter than most of its full-size American competitors. The way seats are arranged on the Wagoneer L makes up for 113 cubic feet of space behind the front row and 44 cubic feet of space with the third-row seats up. The 2023 Jeep Wagoneer L will compete with the likes of the Chevy Suburban, GMC Yukon Xl, and Cadillac Escalade ESV.

Out of the bunch, the Escalade ESV has held the crown when it came to interior room, luxury, and all-in-one family ride. But now, the Jeep Wagoneer L gets more cargo space than the Escalade ESV thanks to the extended wheelbase.

Americans Love Full-Size SUVs

The Jeep Wagoneer came to the US market back in the 1970s as the demand for a family SUV that packed a ton of cargo, off-road spirit, and overall great comfort was absent at the time. The first-generation Wagoneer was so ahead of its time it went into production for 28 years without changing much to the recipe.

As for 2022, Jeep Wagoneer was reborn, bringing Jeep back to the center of focus in the full-size SUV category. Reviving the Wagonner hasn’t been enough for Jeep, as all the competition already offers their standard full-size SUVs in a stretched wheelbase model - so it makes perfect sense for Jeep to release their super-stretched Wagoneer too.

Despite looking like a premium minivan thanks to the straight roof and boxy rear-end, the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer make use of 7 extra inches to the already long wheelbase. Both models now measure 130 inches of wheelbase or 226.7 inches bumper to bumper.

Now, here is the problem with most SUVs packing a third-row seat. With the third-row seat up, the cargo volume is almost uncountable. Surely there is a solution to that as drivers might add a rooftop cargo carrier which is not as practical as opening and closing the hatch.

The 2023 Wagoneer benefits from 42.1 cubic feet of cargo volume behind third-row seats, while the more luxurious Grand Wagoneer L gets 44.2 cubic feet. The latter also gets 88.8 cubic feet of space behind the second-row seats, while the Grand Wagoneer comes short by 3 cubic feet. Cargo volume behind front-row seats is 130.9 cubic feet for the Wagoneer L and 112.9 cubic feet for the Grand Wagoneer L.

Here Is How The Wagoneer L Compares With The Escalade ESV

The overall length of the Cadillac Escalade ESV is 227 inches, while the Wagoneer L’s get 226.7 inches. The Escalade ESV is 4.1 inches longer in wheelbase as opposed to the 130 inches of the Grand Wagoneer L. Cargo volume with the third-row seats up is where the Jeep shines with 3,2 extra cubic feet but falls behind in cargo volume behind the second-row seat (5,3 cubic feet lesser) and cargo volume behind first-row seats (12 cubic feet lesser).
