The 2023 Toyota Sequoia is by far, the most talked-about full-size SUV that's hit the market; right after the Toyota RAV4. Being a three-row SUV that's new from the ground up, Toyota's target is to invade the segment with its luxurious, tech-laden SUV that also scores in the performance department, thanks to its new and efficient hybrid powertrain.

The name 'Sequoia' comes from a species of tree that is massive and stands strong, with a life span of close to 2000 years. It's a fitting name, considering the Toyota we're banging on about looks like a proper American SUV until you look at its badge.

It's also appropriate since Toyota is renowned for its durability, tough-as-nails quality, and reliability very few cars/SUVs can match. Let's see if it has what it takes to take the fight to the GMC Yukon, Ford Expedition, Chevrolet Tahoe, and Nissan Armada.

Block the badge out, and simply look at the SUV - nobody could tell it's a Toyota. It's got the straight, crisp lines of an American SUV - and that's a good thing, considering the Sequoia will cater to this market, and add lots of value to those buying one.

The Sequoia has a grille big enough to intimidate smaller crossovers like the Toyota Corolla Cross, nicely detailed headlights a muscular bonnet that the American market is bound to fall in love with. The flared wheel arches are sure to convince buyers walking into Toyota dealerships because it adds a mighty presence to what is already a large SUV.

The sheer width of the windshield and windows tell you a lot about what it's like on the inside. The slab-like roof conveys the message: there's no way anything could happen to its occupants, no matter the impact. Towards the rear, again, it looks unlike any SUV from the Toyota range of cars. There's a simplicity to its rear that's likable, along with the bold 'SEQUOIA' lettering on the tailgate.

There are multiple configurations available for the seating and cargo. Depending on the trim you opt for, second-row occupants get either bench seating or captain chairs, and both recline for comfort. These can be folded and tumbled forward if more cargo room is required.

The best part for third-row passengers is the spacious reclining backseat that features power folding, but what's worth a mention here, is the exclusive Sliding Third Row with an Adjustable Cargo Shelf System. It's the first SUV in this segment to have it.

Toyota hasn't forgotten that the American market will not buy a large SUV without its ability to tow trailers, boats, and RVs, so the Sequoia comes with a maximum towing capacity of 9000 pounds; that's a significant jump over its previous-generation model.

When you think of towing, the Land Rover Discovery Sport pulling bogies and airplanes come to mind, because this was a way for the British brand to promote their capable SUV. With the Toyota Sequoia, we can imagine the SUV doing similar stuff rather effortlessly.

It comes with a Tow Tech Package, available on all the trims, but comes standard on the TRD Pro and Capstone. It even features Straight Path Assist that helps keep the steering in control, further helping to keep the trailer straight, particularly when reversing.

The Sequoia gets a new feature in the form of 'Drive Mode Select'. It offers multiple driving modes, based on the driver's choice and the situation that demands it. Eco, Normal, and Sport are standard settings, plus you get Load-Leveling Rear Height Control Air Suspension and Adaptive Variable Suspension settings that add more driving modes to the mix, like Comfort, Sport S+, and Custom.

When using Sport or Sport S+ settings, the i-Force Max powertrain uses the electric motor's prompt responsiveness. The electric motor does most of the work at low speeds, but after 18mph, the gasoline engine kicks in to deliver the best performance.

Also, the Sequoia shouldn't be a curse to park since it has lots of cameras that reflect the view on the 14-inch touchscreen display, showing exterior angles. Even the digital display rearview camera proves to be useful.

In its third-generation avatar, the Sequoia is powered by a twin-turbo V6 hybrid i-Force Max powertrain. This is the same engine that powers the Toyota Tundra, the hybrid unit makes 437hp and 583 lb-ft of torque. Paired to the engine is a 10-speed automatic gearbox that lets the engine make the most of all the performance and its efficiency of course.

With the latest Sequoia, Toyota promises a better output than the older model. Customers can have their Sequoias with either 2WD or part-time 4WD on the SR5, Limited, Platinum and Capstone trims. You can select between 2WD, 4WD high, or 4WD low through a lever on the central console.

The newest Sequoia is, by far, the best generation model yet. It's an SUV that knows it's an SUV - and one that is completely aware that it must take on some stiff competition. Besides being popular in the United States, it's got the makings of a global winner.
