Jim Carrey fans ahoy! For all those who still miss the funny man onscreen, never mind his strange public appearances and rants of the recent past, Bruce Almighty will certainly get in a few laughs. For those who are not Carrey fans, or fans of comedies with a mildly religious angle, he plays Bruce Nolan, a reporter who never seems to get the scoop.

As the movie progresses, his streak of bad luck continues, till he finally yells at God, who shows up, in the form of Morgan Freeman. God then makes Bruce godly and gives him all his powers, letting him run the world and put things right. Only, Bruce as God messes up and the world runs amok.

But we are not here to write a movie review. Instead, we are here to talk about the cars that God, as in Bruce Almighty, drives in the movie. When he is a down-and-out reporter having a career crisis, Nolan drives a banged-up Datsun 280Z, which to us is sacrilege. More on that later.

And when he’s God, able to do just about anything, including giving his girlfriend some really fine loving without being there, he drives a Saleen S7 supercar, which is fitting.

So, here’s what God drives and why the Saleen S7 fits the part. That said, the Datsun 280Z did not deserve the diss it got.

First, The Datsun 280Z

The kind of life Nolan (Carrey) is shown to be living, is one where he’s always late at the scene and gets the worst reporting gigs ever. Like when he tries to report about Niagara falls in bad weather and gets a soaking. So, he’s shown to be a loser, the man who can never get lucky, even though he has a loving girlfriend in the form of the very delectable Jennifer Aniston.

His car is shown to be a 1976 Datsun 280Z, and it’s as much of a loser as he is, which technically is JDM hara-kiri. While the 280Z Datsun is on the bottom rung of the Nissan Z cars, it's still no lightweight and to show Nolan to have no regard for his car clearly hints more of the devil, than God.

For a down-on-luck reporter, it's simply the wrong kind of car to show. Plus, Bruce here does not care about his car with the door-slamming, head-banging, tantrum-throwing he does with it, and in it. His pre-God stint ends with him smashing the poor 280Z and making it look pitiable. And that’s the end of the 280Z in the movie, although later, this very car, in pristine condition, did show up in an auction, listed at $8,000-15,000. It’s a 1976 Datsun 280Z 2+2 model and comes with black interiors and a Chevy 5.7-liter V8 running on an automatic transmission.

The Move To Saleen S7

When Bruce is turned into God, or rather given part of God’s godly powers, he decided to make his automobile as godly, or goodly, as he can. Out went the Datsun 280Z and in came the Saleen S7, a half-a-million-dollar supercar that was the brainchild of the former racer, Steve Saleen.

The Saleen S7 was a 220 MPH, 550-horsepower wonder, and came with demonic looks, sculpted sleek design, and scissor doors. To make it look God-like, the Saleen S7 came in white. It comes powered with an all-aluminum 7.0-liter V8 that not only made 550 horses but also churned 525 lb-ft of torque married to a six-speed synchromesh transaxle. It also had a limited slip-differential for added balance and power and rode on a double-wishbone suspension with aluminum dampers for a smooth ride. Saleen S7 came plush, dressed in Conolly leather as well as plenty of trim and performance sport seats.

With power, comes responsibility, and so the Saleen S7 came with specially-engineered Brembo brakes. For the best ride ever, it rode on forged alloy wheels wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero high-performance Rossa tires.

The Saleen S7 looked good, and if it was good enough for God to drive, who are we to question that?

God’s Car, On eBay

In 2003, this very God car, from Bruce Almighty, landed up on eBay for sale. According to Motor Trend, Beau Boeckmann, vice president of Galpin Motors said this was an opportunity for anyone and everyone to own the iconic Saleen S7. Said he, “We wanted to attract buyers from around the globe, giving as many collectors as possible a chance to own this unique vehicle that is both an automotive tour de force and, now, the definitive piece of movie memorabilia”.

We don’t know how much that particular Saleen S7 went for, or where is it today but we do know that the Saleen S7 remains an elusive supercar, one that not many know of. But it still manages to get plenty of attention and fetches auction prices of anything between $170,000-470,000.

God-like or not, the Saleen S7 remains the car that God drove in Bruce Almighty, and for Carrey’s fans, it’s the boss…
