Blessed with some of the world's most desirable supercars and a private test track on your doorstep, it would be a criminal waste of resources and opportunities not to put every Ferrari through its paces. However, before getting too engrossed in which Ferrari is faster, it's worth pointing out that some of the most famous models are not present, the Testarossa was too big and heavy, and both the F40 and F50 failing to get close in terms of lap times are sure to be shock to some gearheads.

Remembering just how many new Ferraris roll out of Modena each year, it's no surprise these glorious past masters are left trailing. Just as the number one spot falls to the latest Ferrari supercar, you be rest assured next year there will be another faster successor.

We never thought we'd see the day when the Enzo would be so easily out-classed by its brethren, let alone smaller displacement cars. However, time moves on and the Enzo was never going to remain at the top of the pile in terms of performance, even if it did ship with a 6-liter V12 pumping out 651 hp.

The last time we got a GTO badged Ferrari, it was the bonkers turbocharged 288 GTO from 1984, known for its mix of 308 inspired bodywork and an engine that would later find a home in the F40. Fast-forward to 2010, and the GTO was re-born out of the 599, a V12 powered GT with a top speed of 205 mph.

The GTO was both lighter and more powerful, saving over 100 lbs in excess weight with a minor bump in power to 661 hp. However, Ferrari didn't just tweak the engine, the GTOs transmission came from the 599XX boasting multiple shift patterns, in the right conditions accelerating to 60 mph in 3.3-seconds. At its launch, Ferrari proudly boasted that the 599GTO was their fastest road car to date, lapping Fiorano in 1m 24s.

Ferrari's 458 Speciale was the last of its kind to use naturally aspirated engines, every "small" Ferrari since has featured turbochargers or hybrid set-ups to unleash more performance. No such trickery in the back of this stunning example, just 4.5-liters of Italian V8 engineering punching out 597 hp at a heady 9000 rpm.

Down on power in comparison to later V8 Ferraris, the 458 Speciale puts up a good show with a lap of Fiorano in 1m 23.5s despite a 110 hp power deficit. Let it be said that turbocharged Ferrari's are good, but the older non-turbo cars are more engaging and very nearly as quick.

All the Ferrari technical jargon sounds impressive enough, but in the real world where the stopwatch doesn't lie, the F8 managed to haul itself around Fiorano in 1m 22.5s, a full second slower than its predecessor. Maybe we're missing something or the track conditions were less favorable, but we'd expect the F8 to be faster.

Another storming example of why smaller engined Ferrari's make better sports cars. Sandwiched between a slew of V12 powered monsters, the 488 Pista puts forward a good argument for less is more. Packing eight cylinders and a brace of turbochargers dishing out 710 hp from a comparatively small 3.9-liter displacement, the Pista certainly delivering a lap time of 1m 21.5s.

The difference here like so many Ferrari specials are hidden from view, lighter pistons, stronger connecting rods and a new camshaft in effect upgrading the 488s engine to challenge spec resulted in more power and performance.
