Hybrid cars are rapidly becoming more and more the norm in the automotive world, supplemented of course by fully dedicated electric vehicles. The mass-market hybrid can trace its roots right back to the Toyota Prius of the late 1990s, but since then hybrid and electric technology has come a long way. No longer are hybrids seen as quite boring and unexciting cars, but fast performance cars and dependable family machines. There are even hybrid hypercars coming from various companies. One of the largest automotive company’s that is currently looking at hybrid technology is that of Mercedes-Benz.

Mercedes has a long history with performance cars, be they sports or supercars. Plus, they have plenty of experience with hybrids, both on the road and in the world of Formula 1. Mercedes have longed to bring that hybrid technology onto the roads with the AMG Project One, but that has still not been delivered to customers. However, Mercedes-AMG has launched a new car, the GT 63 S E Performance, the first performance hybrid car to come from Mercedes-AMG, and drawing on the company’s technology and knowledge from the Formula 1 world, it has become the most powerful AMG ever.

The Basics Of The 63 S E Performance

First things first, let's look at the basics of this machine. Under the hood of this extraordinary car is a 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine, that has been combined with a synchronous elector motor. The motor features a battery developed by Affalterbach and this has all been mated to the ever-impressive AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system. The power that this car produces is naturally very impressive, with the combined power of the V8 biturbo and the electric motor creating around 843 hp in total. More than enough for anyone to handle.

This also leads to some pretty impressive top speed and acceleration statistics. When it comes to acceleration, the 0-62 mph time of this car is just 2.9 seconds, which instantly puts it in the ballpark with some of the fastest supercars that are currently on the market. The car's top speed is an equally eye-watering 196 mph, roughly. Make no mistake, this car certainly means business. The electric motor is an impressive piece of kit, acting directly on the rear axle, which allows it to more directly convert that power into its acceleration.

Inspired By Formula 1 Technology

It is fair to say Mercedes has led the way in Formula 1 since the introduction of hybrid power units in 2014. Thanks to the knowledge and expertise gained by the brand in Formula 1, they have been able to add all this great hybrid technology to the 63 S E Performance. The car features the AMG high-performance battery or HPB for short, and this battery has been inspired by the development done on the batteries for the Mercedes F1 car. Indeed, the High-Performance Powertrains, or HPP, shop for the Formula 1 engines in Brixworth has been utilized in its creation.

A Stunning Mercedes-AMG Design

As with almost every car that comes from the fabled German manufacturer, the 63 S E Performance features an incredibly striking design. Mercedes-AMG themselves have called the design “expressive”, and say that it highlights the sporty genes of the four-door coupe. The front apron design is based upon that of the two-door AMG GT, and blends in nicely with the rest of the car. This is all befitting a car that has become the flagship of its series. However, the new front apron design isn’t the only one that is set to grab your attention with this latest Mercedes-AMG.

When it comes to color choice, there are going to be four mate finishes, five metallic, and two non-metallic finishes for the consumer to choose from. Plus, seven new paint finishes from the AMG custom range will be available too. The AMG Night Package II, a combination of the AMG Night and Carbon packages, is also available to add to the car. This adds 20 and 21-inch alloy wheels to the car to make it stand out from the standard editions. It is clear that Mercedes-AMG has gone all out to make this car both powerful, and a stand-out on the roads.

It is looking more and more likely that all our cars in the future will either be fully dedicated EVs or hybrids. Mercedes is clearly a company that is dedicated to a future of sustainable power, one of which we need to welcome with open arms. But the 63 S E Performance shows us quite clearly that just because it is a hybrid, it doesn’t have to be boring. This is as far away from boring as it is possible to be, and Mercedes-AMG has created one incredible machine with plenty of power to play with, that is that little bit kinder to the environment.
