Most times sedans these days get a bad rap. There’s an unsaid belief that there are so many better options out there than a sedan. But this is only because most people just don’t give sedans, especially common ones, the time of day to actually prove themselves. They are just placed in a figurative box labeled “boring cars.”

But now that we are in a market where SUVs and trucks absolutely dominate, automakers know that they have to do more to prove that their sedans offerings are worthy of the spotlight. Gratefully uninspiring econobox sedans are fewer and farther between. One may not think that there are many everyday sedans out now that excite.

But digging a little deeper, you can see that there are quite a few sedans that do a lot to excite. Some of these are sleepers and give impressive amounts of power while others are heavy on features. More give more more styling than you’d expect for how much you are paying.

Although they are less popular now, sedans aren’t out for the count yet. These sedans show that common and exciting are not mutually exclusive.

In the past, Toyota Racing Department (TRD) has been mainly found only on their truck and SUVs. But as of late, Toyota has wanted to make it extremely clear that they want everyone to know that they are committed to showing that they make some very exciting vehicles. This is how the Camry TRD was born.

Based on the mid-line and already sporty Camry SE, the TRD version adds exclusive black rims, quad tip exhaust, and an aggressive black rear wing. The usually optional V6 for the Camry comes standard on the TRD and gives segment leading power. This V6 powerhouse cranks out 301-hp and 267 lb-ft of torque. The combination of power and track-ready styling helps this sedan turn heads.

For those who like and want an Audi A7 but don’t want to shell out at least $70,000 for a new one have a cheaper alternative with the Volkswagen Arteon. This sedan has a sleek four door coupe style and plenty of other sharp details that make this vehicle a real contender. One of the best things about Volkswagen is that there plenty of design details that have very close resemblance to Audi design cues. This can be seen with items like the “virtual cockpit” that is now used in both Audi and Volkswagen models.

Other details that make the Arteon unique are the LED strips in the headlights that connect to the chrome slats in the grille. Piano black accents in the interior give the inside a more premium feel in comparison to other Volkswagen models and just other sedans in general. Add in a starting price of just under $37,000 makes a perfect combination for a luxurious sedan with even meaner looks.

Dodge Charger Hellcat

It is pretty common to see base line chargers in a rental vehicle parking lot. But Dodge is not quiet about how impressive the Charger can be. The top trim Hellcat adds in a 6.2-liter V8 with a supercharger. This hellish combo gives the usually average Charger the power it deserves. The lowest amount of horsepower that this sedan makes is 707. But more recent iterations of the Hellcat give it even more horsepower.

The Hellcat Redeye Charger ups this number to an absurd 797-hp which puts it up near the top of the list for the highest amounts of power output for a four door sedan. To accompany so much power is an exhaust note that is not only exhilarating but also distinctive. Dodge made sure that it has the grunt and perfect supercharged whine necessary to represent this much power

Something else unique about the Charger is that it is one of the few reminding new large sedans on the market. Many other car brands have abandoned this segment years ago. But thankfully the Charger shows that large sedans can still be relevant and appealing. The slightly bigger size of the charger gives it more of a commanding stance on the road for a sedan.

Despite popular belief, you don’t need to own a truck, SUV, or even a performance oriented sedan to have something that is considered exciting. The four door typical sedan has a lot to offer when you know what you are looking for. Styling that gives a sleek look and more power than you think a sedan should have make these specific vehicles worthy contenders in the automotive industry. Sedans have thrived for this long because of how they can blend both practicality and excitement. Here’s to hoping there are even better days for sedans ahead.
