For car manufacturers, being the best at what they do is important. Especially when these automakers are focused on offering the best performance vehicles on the market. Having the fastest car in its class means something: it tells the world that that particular brand has managed to achieve a level of design and engineering few others can hold a candle to.

Today, high performance isn't just reserved for sports cars and sedans, but it’s also available in segments such as pickups and SUVs. So, to showcase just how far the industry has come performance-wise, here are the two fastest street-legal cars in each segment.

10 Sports Cars: Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ (304 MPH)

When the Bugatti Veyron first went over the 250 mph mark in 2005, it started a battle between the top performance manufacturers that are still going on today. In 2007, the SSC Ultimate Aero took the crown, only for Bugatti to steal it back in 2010 with the Veyron Super Sport. In 2017, a new king of the jungle appeared: the Koenigsegg Agera RS, and it still holds the record today. Guinness production car records are a big deal, but it’s not all that counts and that's why the Chiron Super Sport 300+ is included on this list.

On August 2, 2019, the Chiron Super Sport 300+ reached 304.77 mph, beating the Agera RS by a significant margin. But there are two reasons why the Bugatti is not the official record holder.

Firstly, the top speed was achieved in a unidirectional run, and for the run to be "legal," it needs to be done two times, one in each direction. Secondly, for the record to be official, it needs to be performed by a production car, and the Chiron that set the record was a "nearly production" prototype car.

Koenigsegg only made 25 Agera RS supercars. It's powered by a twin-turbocharged 5-liter V8 that produces 1,340 horsepower. It does 0 to 60 in 2.9 seconds, which is almost as fast as the Tesla Model S on Ludicrous Mode.

The official run determining the Guinness World Record for the fastest production car was done on November 4, 2017, and the Agera RS clocked an average speed of 278 mph from both runs. It managed a top speed of 285 mph, which is simply amazing.

But the Agera RS’s reign might be coming to an end. On October 10, 2020, SSC claimed that their new car, the Tuatara, set a new speed record. According to them, the car did 331 mph on a one-way run and achieved an average speed of 316 mph on the two-way run.

Why isn't the SSC Tuatara on this list then? Well, first of all, the SSC Tuatara had not homologated for street use yet, meaning that it is not street legal. But most importantly, there were a lot of controversies surrounding those runs. The GPS was not validated by the producer. On top of that, the veracity of the record was challenged by many sources, claiming that the video showing the record was fake and that the car didn't even get to 250 mph. In the meantime, the Agera RS still holds the official record and Koenigsegg hasn’t shied away from reminding everyone.

8 SUV: Bentley Bentayga Speed (190 MPH)

When SUVs started to gain popularity, no one imagined there’d be one with a 600-hp engine capable of doing 190 mph. That is, untilBentley—a brand known for pushing the boundaries in luxury and performance—did it.

The Bentayga is the most luxurious and fastest SUV ever. It has a 6-liter twin-turbocharged W12 engine producing a blistering 635 horsepower. Sadly, this engine won't be available anymore from 2021, and it will be replaced with a twin-turbo V8 generating 542 hp, opening the door for another SUV to take the crown.

Via: www.topgear.com

The W12 Bentayga Speed is capable of doing 0 to 60 in 3.8 seconds, which is half a second less than one of the fastest sedans on this list. It’s also capable of reaching a top speed of 190 mph, which is amazing given the fact that this is a very heavy SUV. My only question here is, will somebody ever go that fast in a Bentayga?

7 SUV: Lamborghini Urus (190 MPH)

motor1.com

The Bentayga is not the only SUV that’s capable of reaching the 190 mph mark. Compared to the Bentayga, the Urus has a much smaller engine: a twin-turbocharged 4-liter V8 that produces 650 horsepower, which is actually a modified version of the engine found in cars such as the Porsche Cayenne and the Bentley Flying Spur V8.

With this SUV, Lamborghini intended to transfer all of their luxury and performance from their cars into an SUV, and they completely nailed it, especially with the interior design. It's the practical Lamborghini we never thought we needed. The Urus does 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds, which is supercar territory.

6 Pickups: Dodge Ram SRT10 (153 MPH)

Via: www.diariomotor.com

I'm sure you didn't expect the fastest pickup truck to be over 15 years old, but it is. The Dodge Ram SRT-10 is an absolute beast and not the kind of truck you are used to seeing on the streets.

Under the hood hides an engine borrowed from the Dodge Viper: an 8.3 liter V10 producing 510 horsepower. This allows the SRT-10 to do 0-60 in only 4.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 153 mph. On the exterior, "Viper Powered" badges were added, and on the back, a tonneau cover with a spoiler attached that’s supposed to help with airflow.

Dodge produced two versions: a regular cab (5,529 units), which was only available with a Tremec 6-speed manual transmission, and a quad cab version (4614 units), available only with a four-speed automatic transmission.

Due to the low production numbers, this truck is super rare but is not worth millions: the quad cabs go for around $30k, while the regular cabs start at around $40k, up to $50k, or even $70k for a really low mileage unit.

5 Pickups: Ford F-150 Shelby Super Snake (150 MPH)

Via: www.motorpasion.com

The F-150 Shelby Super Snake is another great example of how good the results are when you mix a Muscle Car with a truck (should we call it a muscle truck?). The specs sheet on this truck is truly amazing. It has a supercharged 5-liter V8 that produces an explosive 770 horsepower.

Other performance modifications include a Borla exhaust system, Shelby-tuned lowered suspension, bigger fuel injectors, upgraded throttle body, and a carbon fiber cold air intake. All of this, alongside a 10-speed automatic transmission, allows this beast to do 0-60 in under 3.5 seconds and hit a top speed of 150 mph.

It wouldn't be a true Shelby-tuned car if the exterior didn't show everyone what's going on. The most eye-catching features on the outside include Shelby badges, 22-inch wheels, polished exhaust tips, and center racing stripes down the center.

The price for one of these is around $100,000, both used or bought brand new, but you can get a used one with low mileage for about $80,000.

4 Sedans: Bentley Flying Spur (207 MPH)

Via: www.autoexpress.co.uk

Once again, Bentley is on the top of the list, this time in the sedan category. The 2020 Flying Spur is the ultimate luxury vehicle, combining the best materials, cutting edge technology, and handwork made by the artsmen at Bentley. All this luxury and technology is combined with an exquisite powertrain: a twin-turbocharged 6-liter W12 engine, pushing out 635 horsepower, that's paired to a dual-clutch 8-speed automatic transmission.

Via: motorsactu.com

Even though it weighs over 2 tons, the Flying Spur does 0-60 in only 3.8 seconds thanks to its AWD traction system. Many can’t imagine going that fast in a super luxury sedan, but Bentley has managed to push the boundaries of what is possible by building a car that’s capable of hitting 207 mph while sitting comfortably in a two-ton land yacht.

3 Sedans: Aston Martin Rapide AMR (205 MPH)

Via: www.autocar.co.uk

Second place for the fastest sedan is actually a draw between the Dodge Charger Hellcat and the Aston Martin Rapide AMR. This car, in my opinion, is the ultimate performance sedan.

It has a big-old naturally aspirated 6-liter V12 that produces 603 hp, launching this car from 0-60 in 4.4 seconds, and a top speed of 205 mph. Production was limited to 210 units at a price of approximately $200,000.

Apart from the performance increase compared to the regular Rapide, the AMR (which stands by Aston Martin Racing) has a more aggressive body kit, which includes a new grille, a rear spoiler, carbon fiber diffusers, and lips. It also has upgraded brakes, with 400 mm discs at the front and 360 mm at the back.

2 Hatchbacks: Audi RS3 Sportback (175 MPH)

The first hot-hatches appeared back in the 1970s, as performance versions of practical and cheap hatchbacksSince then, hot hatches have evolved a lot, adopting features such as turbocharged engines, AWD traction, improved brakes, and suspension.

The Audi RS3 is the perfect example of a modern hot-hatch, even though it performs like a sports car. It has a turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine that produces 400 horsepower that’s paired to an S-Tronic 7-speed automatic transmission.

Thanks to its massive power, low weight, and—most importantly—the Quattro AWD system, this modern hot hatch launches from 0 to 60 in 4.1 seconds, and it's able to reach 175 mph.

1 Hatchbacks: Mercedes Benz A45S AMG (168 MPH)

Via: automotiva.com.ar

Ever imagined a hot hatch making supercar power? Me neither, but Mercedes is here to show us that it’s not only possible but also very cool. The AMG A45 S is a more powerful version of the already powerful A45 AMG.

It has a 2-liter turbocharged engine that produces 420 horsepower, the same as the 2018 Ford Mustang V8. It has the 4MATIC+ AWD system, 8-speed dual-clutch transmission, and a drive mode selector that includes a very cool Drift Mode.

Via: automotiva.com.ar

This AMG's performance is brilliant: it does 0-60 in 3.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 168 mph. One of the best parts about this AMG, however, is the styling. It’s got a very aggressive front bumper, 19-inch wheels with giant disc brakes and calipers, four exhaust tips, a rear spoiler, and carbon fiber details, making it simply beautiful.
