Chevrolet's mid-engined Corvette has been on the roads for over a year now, proving that America's long-standing sports car has now earned the supercar status it perhaps always deserved. But no matter how delayed Corvette fans may believe the changeover might have been, the sad news about the C8 involves coronavirus-related delays and slowdowns that mean higher-spec variants still haven't hit the streets. Anxious buyers awaiting those highly anticipated ZR1 and Z06 C8 Corvettes should take heart, however, as a new video from the YouTube channel Brink of Speed claims to have uncovered publicly available evidence of spy shots revealing a Chevrolet Corvette test mule running a twin-turbo setup.

Input From Corvette Ron Himself

For more than the past year, the Corvette community has fretted that GM might skip over a twin-turbo C8 in favor of supercharging and potentially hybridizing the mid-engined 6.2-liter V8. The naturally aspirated LT2 currently on the market maxes out at only 495 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, well shy of the C7 ZR1's factory rating of 755 horses out of its supercharged 6.2-liter LT5 V8. But in the modern era, as Dodge appears to creep ever close to the four-figure range with its wild Hellcat variants, even 755 ponies wouldn't do the trick for a maxed-out C8 Corvette. And now, Brink of Speed claims to have communicated with a personality known as @Corvette_Ron_Himself (CRH) about the potential twin-turbo C8.

Filming Quality Will Naturally Lead To Skepticism

Apparently, CRH was perusing some footage online—which appears to have been filmed using a potato—of a heavily camouflaged C8 test mule that was filmed in June of 2020 when he noticed what he believes to be evidence of twin-turbochargers under the Corvette's skin.

Brink of Speed describes CRH's mechanical knowledge as significant, and anyone should be able to recognize just the sound of turbochargers spooling up, even if the noise could be muffled by bad sound equipment, plus the roar of a Ferrari 458 and Porsche GT2 RS in the background. The film quality obviously leads to skepticism, especially since the cars never fully rev up their engines.

Zooming In On The Spy Shots

Perhaps the most telling piece of evidence supporting CRH and Brink of Speed's claim that this is, in fact, a twin-turbo 'Vette comes in the form of a zoomed-in spy shot focusing on the exhaust system. Next to two larger exhaust tips, poking out of the camo, two additional outlets seem to look a lot like turbo wastegates—and the burnt titanium-like metal surrounding could definitely be used in a pair of snails, though their shape almost suggests that this could be a quad-tipped muffler equally as much as it might be a twin-turbo setup. Unfortunately, the video's image and sound quality will leave this in the realm of contention, at least until more concrete evidence surfaces in advance of GM's official announcements.
