Mercedes introduced the C63 AMG in 2007, and it was designed to compete directly with the BMW M3. Since the battle between the BMW M3 E30 and the Mercedes-Benz 190 2.5-16, the competition between the two big German car manufacturers has shifted from luxury features to performance, with power increases ranging from 200 to over 400 horsepower in less than 20 years.

The C-Class AMG was not a car for the faint of heart. As much as the loud V8 under the hood, the flared arches, aggressive front bumper, and rear four oval exhausts screamed for attention. The C63 AMG demonstrated that Mercedes-Benz can make fast cars as well as comfortable ones, with specially designed 19" high-sheen alloy wheels and aerodynamically profiled side-sills. A 6.3 AMG silver badge was placed on each of the front fenders and one on the trunk lid to let onlookers know what was going on.

The exterior modifications were carried over inside with bucket seats and other subtle changes such as aluminum pedals and trim. Four analog gauges were divided into three dials in the instrument cluster. The tachometer displayed 6.3 – V8 in white-on-black writing. Two aluminum paddle-shifters were located behind the steering wheel.

When compared to other C-Class models, the tuned suspension ensured a faster cornering speed. Furthermore, the ESP had three stages, one of which allowed for some drifting. The front axle has been redesigned to allow for a 35 mm (1.37") track increase while reducing understeer. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC featured a blipping function that allowed you to rev-match the engine while downshifting.

For The 2007 Mercedes C63 AMG, The Exterior & Interior Design Is Simply Elegant

The 2007 C63 AMG is a wolf in sheep's clothing, just like the rest of the AMG lineup. The average person would not recognize it as anything more than a basic C220 CDI, but it is far more than a mundane compact executive to a true cheval chevalier. The L-shaped headlights from the facelifted C-Class are combined with an angular bumper with LED running lights.

Moving backwards, you'll notice redesigned 18-inch AMG alloy wheels, a small boot spoiler, and quad tailpipes, all of which point to the C63's performance. Swatches of leather and aluminum, as well as a suede-trimmed steering wheel, adorn the interior. With the integrated screen fitting beautifully in the center of the dash, the Mercedes is in a league of its own when compared to the BMW M3. The AMG is, as you might expect, a fantastic place to sit.

Inside the C63 AMG, drivers will find newly developed AMG leather sport seats with integrated headrests finished in a special cross piping, as well as an AMG three-spoke sport steering wheel with distinctive aluminum shift paddles. The C63 AMG's unique "tubular" AMG instrument cluster features redesigned analog gauges and red needles.

Special "Warmup," "Setup," and "Race" modes are available via the multi-function buttons on the steering wheel, according to an AMG menu in the central display. "Warmup" shows the current engine oil and coolant temperatures, "Setup" shows the current ESP and transmission shift modes, and "Race" activates a timer that allows the driver to measure lap times for those who enjoy pushing their vehicles to even higher limits.

An Overview Of The 2007 Mercedes C63 AMG Powertrain

The 2007 C63 AMG is powered by AMG's first engine, a 6.3-liter V8 that produces 451 horsepower and 443lbs-ft of torque, allowing for breathtaking acceleration times of 4.3 seconds from zero to 60 mph. The AMG 6.3-liter has four valves per cylinder, variable valve timing, bucket tappets (rather than rocker arms), and a variable intake manifold, and is almost entirely made of a high-strength silicon-aluminum alloy. The cylinder bores have a TWAS (twin-wire-arc-sprayed) coating, which is a new process that produces cylinders with twice the hard running surfaces as traditional cast-iron cylinders.

The 6.3-liter engine block was designed with an especially rigid bedplate that acts as the overall support for the main bearings, cast-in steel reinforcements, and a sturdy closed-deck layout in the cylinder head area, according to AMG engineers. The 6.3 AMG engine's high-flow intake and exhaust ports form a vertical straight line, allowing it to freely rev to over 7,000 rpm while still producing nearly 90% of its peak torque at only 2,000 rpm.

The 2007 C63 AMG's power is sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed AMG Speedshift automatic transmission with manual shift paddles on the AMG sport steering wheel. The manual mode of AMG Speedshift does not intervene to cause any automatic upshifts or automatic downshifts, even at maximum engine speed, to give performance-minded drivers total control of shifting. From first gear, the AMG Speedshift electronic control allows for 35 percent faster gear shifts and torque converter lockup.

The 2007 C63 AMG is the first AMG vehicle to feature automatic "throttle blipping" during downshifts. This virtually jolt-free downshifting process improves braking in advance of turn-in and reduces load-change handling response for motorsports-minded drivers.
