Stancing a car is a modification that's known to cause a lot of controversy among the car community. Some love the look, while others think it's too impractical or don't see the point. As divisive as it is, it's also hugely popular, with almost every manufacturer's cars being subject to the trend at some point. Even Ferraris aren't safe from getting stanced.

As one of the most popular JDM brands, it's no wonder that nearly every model of Nissan has been stanced by someone. The difference between them and the low Ferraris is that Nissans are more natural candidates to be low, as the trend started around JDM cars and has been prevalent in Japan for decades. Even those less convinced by the merits of stance should agree that these Nissans look great when they're scraping the ground.

The stock 370Z is a car that some would argue was outdated as soon as it left the factory, thanks to its decades-old cabin and mediocre engine. Still, the current-gen Z has plenty of fans, and it's a serious looker when it's been modified.

The pinkish-red hue of this example's custom paintwork make the stock lines of the Nissan really pop out, with a full Carbon Signal body kit adding an aggressive tone. A set of Avant Garde F520 wheels rounds off the car's colorful look.

9 Skyline R34

The performance potential of R34s is such that some would see adding bagged suspension as sacrilege. That hasn't stopped modders from doing it, with this owner also rolling the fenders to ensure the wheels fit snugly within the arches.

The rest of the car is kept largely stock, with a few aftermarket tweaks to add the owner's personal touch. The air suspension on this car means it can raise and lower to accommodate more uneven roads. So, the performance of the car should remain largely unchanged despite its' low look.

240SXs are a favorite among the modding community for their drift-ready handling and plentiful aftermarket scene. This one is a fairly unique build, and it features a full suite of custom parts. The car is a bit of a mashup, having the front end off a JDM Silvia.

Several components, including the brakes, are taken from a 300ZX. The engine is a RB25DET, most commonly found in the R33 Skyline. All these modifications have been done in the name of performance, and the car is seriously fast. It's also seriously low, proving that stance doesn't always mean static.

7 Cima

The Cima was produced specifically for the Japanese market, as a rival to the Toyota Crown Majesta. The earlier Cimas were Japan-only, but some later models were exported to the US as the Infiniti Q45.

This slammed model is fairly stock apart from its height, giving it that stealthy JDM sedan look that so many modders love. The car sits on coilovers rather than air suspension, which means the height is fixed. It's an odd choice for such a long car and it makes driving it much more of a chore than a bagged version would. Still, it looks great.

This 350Z sports a Rocket Bunny kit, a trade name of the popular aftermarket brand Pandem. Their kits are known to be extreme, taking a car's natural silhouette and distorting it with wider arches, aggressive bumpers and wings.

This is a particularly nice example that really summarizes what the brand is about. It's quite aggressively stanced, with the rear wheels in particular sporting a lot of negative camber. Love it or loathe it, it definitely makes a statement.

5 Skyline GTR 2000

The granddad of all fast Skylines, the GTR 2000 is a rare and very desirable piece of metal. Most modders therefore try to be more respectful of the car than with less valuable models. This Skyline has been given the stance treatment but in a way that's consistent with the more traditional Japanese customization styles.

It still sports coilover suspension that make the tires sit within millimetres of the wheel arch. But, the owner went to great lengths to make sure they didn't rub as he didn't want to destroy the driving dynamics of the original car. This is as close to a grail car for many JDM fans as it's possible to get.

4 President

Nissan's luxury limousine offering was used mainly by business executives and government officials in the four and a half decades it was produced. Nevertheless, some Presidents found their way into the hands of modders who decided to give the car a slammed makeover. The sharper-eyed may have already spotted the Infiniti badge on the back of the car.

That's there because the President was also sold in export markets as the Infiniti Q45. Confusingly, both the Nissan Cima sedan and Nissan President were sold as Q45s at some points despite being two separate models. Less confusing is this car's modification setup, with coilovers, rolled fenders and a cool purple paint job.

The Nissan/Datsun 240Z was a sports car that helped revolutionize Nissan's image outside Japan and paved the way for it to become a global brand. The model is also very popular as a base for project cars, one of which is this pink 240Z from Sweden.

There's a number of little features on the car which are a nod back to the Nissan's home country; the exposed radiator is a JDM staple, for example. It's a cleanly-done build that fits right in with its Scandinavian surroundings, although its meager ride height must cause issues on gravel roads.

2 300ZX

This 300ZX is wonderfully retro, with its wider rear fender and dropped suspension emphasizing its' wedgy '80s shape. Early 300ZXs are a more obscure model than their newer, more tech-focused successors, so it's great to see the underdog getting some love here.

It's a classy build that gets the details just right. The two-tone paint is a perfect match for the blocky taillights and subtle body kit. The car also sports yellow-tinted headlights common across other JDM builds.

1 GTR

Nissan's current flagship model is the GTR, having been on sale since 2007. In that time it's been subject to all sorts of modifications including drag builds, drift builds and of course it's been stanced.

This particular build has had a makeover courtesy of aftermarket specialist Aimgain. There's of course a wide body kit, in the style of Liberty Walk and Rocket Bunny. Air suspension has been used to drop the car when stationary, as if anyone tried to drive it while it was this low the tires would shred almost immediately. Is it the most practical GTR build out there? No, but it's certainly a looker.
