When people buy a new car today there's always a little voice in the back of their head wondering if there will be problems and recalls. Thanks to manufacturer warranties most of those though are quieted quickly. Nevertheless, nobody wants to be without their new vehicle while it's undergoing repairs, or even worse, have it in the shop over and over again fixing numerous problems.

Imagine the feeling of being a Ford Focus RS owner a few months after release. Reports of head gasket issues were rampant and even though it would be covered under warranty it was no fun to run around wondering if you were driving a ticking time bomb. That's why we're reviewing 10 of the most reliable sports cars you can own. Each of these has had some years to really prove themselves, so I'm confident you'll appreciate how capable these sports cars really are.

10 Porsche 911

There's no doubt that at the top of the list has to be the 911. While it's far more expensive than everything else here it's also the first truly reliable exotic sports car of any kind. It's set the bar higher than anything that came before it because not only is it fast but it wakes up every day and doesn't have major issues like similar brands.

9 Chevrolet Corvette

If we're going to talk about 911 then we have to talk about Corvette. Chevy manages a similar result with a more simple approach. The Corvette is well recognized as reliable no matter the generation so find the one you like and can afford and feel confident picking it up. The platform is well-designed for the home mechanic.

Perhaps not as powerful as the Corvette but just as reliable is the VQ powered 350Z. These things are bulletproof if well maintained. They're also easy to work on and the aftermarket is huge. There's tons of space to build on the platform if that's your desire. In addition, the 350 is lighter than the 370 so you get almost everything from the 370 without the added heft.

7 Ford Mustang

Similarly to the Corvette, almost any Mustang is regarded as reliable. This is the last original mustang before the retro era began and frankly, I think it looks good, especially in the Cobra R guise. Depending on the one you get, you'll end up with more than 400 horsepower and a truly brutal driving experience. That's not always bad.

6 Mazda Miata

The simplest solution to this problem is Miata. It's not wildly fast, but around a small track or around town, it's a blast to drive and handles exceptionally well. Thanks to the low weight and high amount of aftermarket power adders there's room to grow the car into whatever you want it to be. In addition, when it does have an issue it can usually be fixed simply and without special tools of any kind.

5 Toyota Supra

The 2JZ is a legendary engine that doesn't seem to have any major issues. The Getrag transmission is equally strong. Even as these things age they truly are a hallmark of strength amongst a vast sea of inferior newer vehicles. Take for example the capability of this engine when it's tuned, it can make more than twice its stock power level.

The new age HEMI V8 has garnered praise and attention for how rock solid it is and it deserves it. That platform is the same one that Dodge has used for the Hellcat engine, the Demon engine, and the insane Hellephant motor. When detuned in the 392 it's still pushing some 440+ horsepower and having driven a few I can tell you, they're responsive, happy to rev and emotionally inspiring.

3 Pontiac GTO

Talk about a simple solution, strap a Corvette engine under the hood of a well-balanced sports car with great suspension and interior fittings and you'll end up with a winner. The GTO was underwhelming in terms of styling and retro feel and that's entirely fair considering it was just a bad case of badge engineering. But what really matters is that it's stout, fast, and pretty inexpensive.

2 Chrysler Crossfire SRT-6

Perhaps one of the most unsung heroes of the 2000s, the Crossfire was under-loved in its time but it's based on the Mercedes SLK (even down to identical interiors) and both are good cars. The supercharged six-cylinder is a powerful powertrain and the car in and of itself is unique in terms of styling and handling. It's tough to find a car that has this much tech that's also reliable but here it is.

1 Honda S2000

via speedhunters.com

Honda knows how to extract every ounce of power they possibly can from their engines. The S2000 takes advantage of this quality like few others. Revving to 9000 RPM certainly helps that cause and the car is well known for being a more grown-up and aggressive spiritual brother to the Miata. No matter where you put it in the family tree, it's a reliable, fast sports car that can be had for pennies these days.
