Credit must be given where it’s due and Tesla does deserve a lot of it. The company was founded as Tesla Motors in 2003 and, under the direction of the unconventional Elon Musk, has grown into the world's best-selling plug-in and battery electric passenger car manufacturer.

The company almost singlehandedly changed the face of the EV industry and has enjoyed a virtually unchallenged reign. However, that may be set to change in the near future as other carmakers are now getting on the EV bandwagon – and some of them are coming in heavy, loaded with revolutionary ideas and the resources to implement them. Tesla will need to be wary of these newcomers otherwise it may just find itself knocked off its feet.

On October 21, 2020, General Motors started taking preorders for the first variant of its upcoming GMC Hummer EV. All the slots were gone in a blistering 10 minutes. We do not know the actual number of Edition One Hummer EVs that were offered but the speed at which they were snapped up does give an indication of how psyched up the market is for this vehicle.

Tesla’s comparable offering here is the Cybertruck but the futuristic-looking pickup might just be in for the fight of its life if the GMC Hummer EV is able to deliver as promised.

The carmaker has stated that this will be the most powerful production F-150 ever with significant towing ability. Full details are not yet available but it has been speculated that the Ford F-150 EV will match or even exceed the Tesla Cybertruck in performance It may also have a few tricks up its sleeve like an EV range extender to tilt the scale in its favor.

8 Lucid Air

Lucid is coming into the EV game well prepared and it appears that they have Tesla centered in their aiming sights. They have some significant advantages that Tesla might do well to be wary of.

First off, Lucid's CEO Peter Rawlings used to be Elon Musk’s colleague and was actually Tesla’s Chief Engineer for the Model S. Also, the Lucid Air is a much better-looking vehicle than its Tesla rival and this, coupled with impressive performance stats, should help them secure a sizeable portion of the market.

Porsche has already tested the EV waters with its Taycan and the car's incredible success is sure to provide a solid platform for the upcoming Macan EV even though they will be playing in different segments.

The Taycan is very well-built and offers performance in an environmentally-friendly package. It is a formula that has so far proven hard to resist and you can expect more of the same from the Macan EV. The Macan EV is set to go up against the Tesla Model Y. Tesla has a rich depth of experience in its corner but don't write off the Macan EV. Don't dare. Please note that the images do not represent the final production version of the Macan EV.

The E-Tron GT is an all-electric sports sedan that should be available for sale sometime in 2021. The car is expected to come equipped with dual motors for its all-wheel-drive system and possesses a 90-kWh battery pack rated for about 400km. This is slightly less than the comparable Tesla Model S which has a quoted range of approximately 416km.

However, range is not the only deciding factor when its comes to sporty EVs like this. Audi may be relatively new to the field of EVs but it is backed by vast financial resources and a rock-solid reputation for quality. It can also draw valuable lessons from its sister company that has already struck gold with the Taycan.

5 Ford Mustang Mach-E

The Tesla Model Y Long Range is set to be the Mach-E’s closest competitor at least in terms of pricing and specs. Initial evidence does place the Model Y above Ford’s EV baby in many aspects but don’t be tempted to write off the silent crossover yet. In terms of pricing, the Ford Mach-E will be eligible for the $7,500 tax credit upon release while the Model Y no longer qualifies for this benefit.

This affordability might just sway buyers towards the Blue Oval especially since its performance is not too far behind the Model Y. Also, you can expect Ford to commit vast amount of resources towards ensuring the success of the Mach-E in the market as the consequences of failure might be catastrophic for the company.

The Benz EQE is a full-size sedan that will be aiming to knock the Tesla Model S off its perch. It is expected to be offered in different variants but for now we know the EQE400 will have 402hp and 564 pound-feet of torque.

The driving range on a single charge is expected to be around 373 miles, which puts it close the Model S. Build quality and interior finishing is one area where the Benz EV will truly shine, putting together a package that no Tesla can ever hope to match. This will be one match-up that will be interesting to watch in the near future.

3 Audi E-Tron

The E-Tron doesn't resemble your typical EV vehicle and that may yet prove to be its biggest advantage over Tesla rivals. The E-Tron is designed to attract people who may not feel comfortable with an abrupt switch to EVs.

It does not drive like one either and this may be enough to make customers forgive its substantially lower range compared to Tesla offerings such as the Model Y. The E-Tron is also loaded with features such as Apple Carplay, heated seats as standard and panoramic sunroof.

In March 2020, General Motors announced a massive $20 billion investment in electrification as it positions itself to take on Tesla. The upcoming Cadillac Lyriq will be at the forefront of that assault. It doesn't just represent the future direction of the Cadillac brand but also forms a significant part of GM’s long-term strategy. They cannot afford to fail.

The Lyriq features a styling that will put any current Tesla model to shame. That upscale design continues on the interior where the Lyriq will feature, among other things, a 33-inch curved LED display that has the ‘highest pixel density available in the automotive industry today’.

1 Volkswagen ID4

Like Audi with the E-Tron, Volkswagen has opted to keep things rather simple with the ID4, at least with the design. It looks just like any other vehicle on the road. The ID4 is set to go up against the Tesla Model Y and the initial released figures show that the Model Y will edge out the ID4 in terms of range and acceleration.

However, an all-wheel-drive ID4 variant with a larger battery pack is in the works and this should significantly close the gap. The ID4 also has the backing of one of the biggest carmakers in the world, revenue-wise and that may well prove a deciding factor in this case.
