EVs are poised to take over the planet, and now they are so much more than the pathetic little Nissan Leafs and Chevy Volts we saw a decade ago. Today we are seeing EV sports cars break all limits of what traditional combustion engined models were capable of. In many cases, EVs are exceeding the capabilities of ICEs. This is a trend set to continue as carmakers the world over re-tool their factories and redirect their research and development.
Today, 100s of billions of dollars are being poured into the development of EVs. We are about to see the fruits of these investments start to roll off the assembly line. The market for EVs is going to be transformed in just one year — although still, the higher-end EVs are still very expensive when it comes to upfront costs.
These upcoming sport EVs have us marveling just how far EVs have come.
10 Aspark Owl
The Aspark Owl is claiming to be the fastest street-legal car on the planet. If this is true, it would outstrip even the vaunted upcoming Tesla Roadster. The Aspark is claiming its flagship can reach 60 mph in a near-instant 1.7 seconds.
This hypercar doesn't come cheap. It's expected to cost an eye-watering $3.56 million! It's also powered by an insane combined 1,985 hp from its electric motors. Its top speed is 249 mph (the Roadster is supposed to be over 250 mph).
9 Lotus Evija
This insane hypercar is expected to set you back a minimum of $2.3 million. Like the Aspark Owl, this limited edition EV is turning the tables of EV engineering on its head (who would have thought?).
Only 130 vehicles are planned to be produced, and they will be powered by some 2,000 hp and 1254 lb-ft of torque. It will accelerate to 60 mph in less than 3 seconds and have a top speed of 200 mph.
8 Pininfarina Battista
Another upcoming multi-million hypercar is soon to be found roaring along on the streets of the world. This beast is also reported to be able to accelerate to 60 mph in less than 2 seconds and will have top speed of 215 mph.
It is also reported to have a (somewhat average) range of around 280 miles on a charge and is only to be produced in a limited production run of some 150 units.
7 Telsa Roadster
This anticipated sports car is planned to accelerate to 60 mph in less than 2.0 seconds and will have an unbeatable range, forecast to be 620 miles on a single charge.
It will be virtually tied with the Aspark Owl for the title of the fastest street car, with a top speed in excess of 250 mph. It will also be much cheaper than the two listed above with a price of $200,000 or $250,000, depending on when you order it.
6 Faraday Future FF 91
This is another sports car hopefully soon to hit the streets next year. It is another original design and features special "zero gravity" rear seats. We just need to see if the company can secure the financing it needs to put it into production.
The FF 91 is anticipated to cost between $120,000 and $200,000 and accelerate to 60 mph in just 2.39 seconds. It will have a range in excess of 300 miles and a combined horsepower of 1,080.
5 Porsche Taycan
This is one of the very few sports EVs actually on the market at the time of writing. The Taycan is already a Porsche bestseller, and they have big plans for it as they pivot to EV-only fleets.
The Taycan has a top speed of 143 mph and a range of 285 miles on a single charge. Compared to the near-instant acceleration above it seems a little sluggish, reaching 62 MPH in 5.4 seconds.
4 Porsche Macan EV
This upcoming EV will be Porshe's first EV SUV and will offer a better (still undisclosed range) than the popular Porsche Taycan. Porsche has been encouraged by the surprising popularity of its Porsche Taycan.
It is being built on a new EV platform and is not expected until 2023. Porsche is aiming to improve on its existing Taycan specs, which have been a little criticized for having less mileage than other top EVs like Telsa's lineup.
3 2023 Cadillac Lyriq
GM has promised to transform itself into an entirely electric car company by 2035. Cadillac is to be the vanguard of that, having a target to be EV only by 2030. The upcoming Cadillac Lyriq is the car brand's first EV.
The Lyrid is expected to have a range exceeding 300 miles and will be incorporating Cadillac's Super Cruise technology. It is built on GM's cutting-edge Ultium battery platform, from which it plans to build more of its EVs.
2 Lucid Air
Like the Cadillac Lyriq, the Lucid Air is more of a luxury vehicle than a sports car, but still, it's about to boast the longest range of any EV. It's expected to have a maximum range of over 500 miles.
Tesla had planned to make a version of the Model S to exceed that, but they have since abandoned those plans. The Lucid Air is poised to go into production and its company, Lucid Motors has big plans for the future.
1 Mercedes EQS
Finally, we would like to mention the best EV yet from Mercedes. The luxury EQS has an impressive range of some 385 miles on a charge. It has perhaps the best range of EVs from a legacy auto-maker.
Its top speed is 130 mph and is expected to go into production toward the end of this year. It is excepted to cost around 145,000 for the higher editions — so it's going to be a little pricey.
