The 2022 BMW M8 Gran Coupe is a luxury 4-door sports sedan that you need to get if you want the performance and fun that is offered by a 2-door coupe without losing too much on the convenience front. Launched at an MSRP of $130,000, the 2022 BMW M8 Gran Coupe comes with the same twin-turbo V8 motor mated to the fast-shifting 8-speed automatic, giving out one of the best acceleration times in the segment.

The interior is also laid out with luxurious materials, and it is decent in terms of cabin space. The long list of standard features coupled with many optional packages and trims to personalize according to the buyer's wish makes it a perfect choice for many luxury sedan buyers. The only change to this 2022 model year is the inclusion of the Competition package as standard and the optional M Carbon bucket seat. Competing with the Audi RS7 and Mercedes-AMG GT63 S, here are 10 things you need to know before buying the 2022 BMW M8 Gran Coupe.

10 Beautiful Design Turns Heads

The beautiful design of the outgoing model year has been retained in this 2022 iteration and the buyers are going to be impressed with the clean overall proportions, stunning rear quarter due to the sloping roofline, and the striking front end with the neat LED headlights, honeycomb grille, and classy kidney grille setup.

The sporty design of the front end is carried to the sides in the form of 20" M Star bi-color wheels, fender air vents with neat M badging, and blacked-out mirrors, pillars, and window-line. The rear profile is highlighted by the quad exhaust, air diffuser, and the neatly integrated rear spoiler. A long list of color palettes coupled with many optional packages and features helps to customize the ride according to the wish of the owners too.

9 Twin-Turbo V8 Makes It Feel Like A Rocket

Even though the 2022 BMW M8 Gran Coupe is powered by the same twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 motor that comes with the BMW 840i Gran Coupe, albeit in a more powerful tune, the acceleration of the M8 Gran Coupe outclasses all the rivals. Producing 617 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, the M8 Gran Coupe did the 0-60 mph sprint in 2.8 seconds, making it the fastest of the segment.

The 8-speed automatic transmission is fast in all the different driving modes, and the manual mode can be controlled with the help of paddle shifters. The power is put down through the xDrive AWD drivetrain, however, you can also route the power to the rear wheels only if you fancy some tail-out action. Overall, the M8 Gran Coupe's V8 motor is a hard beast to tame, and the fierce response is going to pull you hard to the sports seats.

8 Fuel Efficiency Is Comparable To The Rivals

Fuel efficiency is going to be the last thing that one would consider when buying an ultimate luxury 4-door sedan with a massive V8 under the hood, and the M8 Gran Coupe is going to disappoint those who are looking to get one as a daily driver. Offering just 15 MPG in the city and 21 MPG on the highway, the fuel efficiency is mediocre at best.

With combined gas mileage of 17 MPG coupled with a fuel tank capacity of 21.1 gallons, this luxury sedan is going to return just 422 miles of tank range on the highways. However, both the Audi RS7 and Porsche Panamera Turbo S returned an identical combined gas mileage of 17 MPG.

7 Well-Appointed Interior

The 2022 BMW M8 Gran Coupe is one of the most expensive offerings in the BMW lineup, and they have made sure that you do get the premium experience when inside the cabin. All the regular touchpoints of this luxury sedan come covered in leather with contrast stitching, aluminum, and piano black elements.

We also loved the comfort and premium factor offered by the optional M Sport bucket seats along with the Alcantara headliner. Apart from that, the M8 Gran Coupe can be had in more than 11 different interior color combinations and multiple interior trim options. The classy cabin design is also complemented by the excellent build quality.

6 Not The Most Spacious Sedan

The sloping roofline of the 2022 BMW M8 Gran Coupe doesn't intrude too much into the headroom for the rear seat occupants like one might expect it to. However, we do not like the mediocre 29.5" of legroom, making it the worst of the segment. The rear seat is also not very comfortable for three passengers, as the middle seat passenger gets terrible under-thigh support.

We're also disappointed with the 15.5 cu-ft of cargo space, which is about 10 cu-ft less than that of the Audi RS7. The high trunk line makes it hard to put stuff in and take it out, as well. However, there are no complaints about the front seats in terms of space. All the features like heated, powered, and massaging seats, leather upholstery, and four-zone automatic climate control further improves the comfort.

5 iDrive Infotainment Is Going To Satisfy Everyone

The 10.3" iDrive touchscreen infotainment system comes stacked onto the center of the dashboard and comes packed with all the connectivity and entertainment features you would expect from such a premium offering. The standard features include Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, voice recognition, Bluetooth, SiriusXM radio, and Harman Kardon audio system.

The standard 16-speaker audio system is superb in terms of bass and treble output. The sound doesn't crack at higher volume as well. When it comes to infotainment, it is one of the most polished infotainment systems out there. The slick interface coupled with the top-notch display quality makes it easier for older folks.

4 Most Of The Driver-Assistance Tech Is Optional

The standard driver-assistance techs included with the 2022 BMW M8 Gran Coupe would make many people chuckle, as the list is minuscule. In comparison, the Audi RS7 managed to fare much better as it comes with a few more standard tech. The M8 Gran Coupe comes with only automated emergency braking, a driver monitoring system, and forward-collision warning as standard.

All the other features like blindspot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane departure warning, and lane-keeping assist are part of the optional packages. They are quite expensive too. Being such an expensive offering, the M8 Gran Coupe hasn't been crash-tested by the NHTSA and IIHS yet.

3 Brakes Feel A Bit Disconnected

We have never admired the braking ability of the BMW M8 Gran Coupe, and that is not due to the hardware that is offered by BMW being mediocre. Coming with massive 15.8" front rotors and 15" rear rotors coupled with all the braking features you could think of, the M8 Gran Coupe did the 70-0 MPH braking in just 147 feet. It can be had with the optional ceramic rotors as well.

However, we hated the feedback offered by this brake-by-wire system, as it feels quite disconnected. Even with the multiple brake modes in the form of sport and comfort, the braking never feels consistent, and that is not something you would expect from such a high-performance premium sedan.

2 Ride Quality Is Harsher Than All The Rivals

via ; Bros FOURR Speed YouTube Channel

If you want a powerful sedan that is also a capable and comfortable daily driver, the 2022 BMW M8 Gran Coupe may not fit the bill perfectly. The suspension is very stiff even in the comfort mode and the ride quality isn't going to excite the passengers one bit.

Driving at slow speed does jostle the passengers when hitting bumps and potholes. The high-speed ride quality doesn't fare too well either. However, the only saving grace of the M8 Gran Coupe is the almost non-existent body roll and the top-notch stability on the highway. In comparison, the RS7 turned out to be a much better proposition if you want something with a better ride.

1 Refined Driving Experience

The super-smooth V8 motor under the hood of the 2022 BMW M8 Gran Coupe makes the driving experience very refined. The transmission shifts smoothly throughout the rev range, and we also loved the impressive sound deadening offered by the BMW. All of this makes sure that you have much less fatigue while going on a long road trip.

Even with the large 20" alloy wheels wrapped in performance tires with thin side walls, the road noise and tire noise are very minimal inside the cabin. The active noise cancellation also works well to filter out all the external noises. The premium cabin and the supportive seats are some of the other plus points of this luxury sedan.
