By now, you've probably watched at least one of the Back To The Future movies. It's been nearly four decades since the first one came out, but any gearhead will tell you about the modified DeLorean DMC-12 car that facilitated Marty's and his eccentric scientist friend's time jumps. It is one of the most recognizable movie cars in the history of cinema, thanks to its gullwing doors and unique wedge shape giving it a futuristic appearance. Well, the future is now, and with the movie franchise in for a potential reboot in 2023, the car is also returning in 2022 as a new luxury electric car with plans for future production.

The all-new reimagined DMC model goes by the name Alpha5 EV Concept, and while it is just a concept for now, the hope is that a version of it will go into production soon. DeLorean revealed that the car would make a public debut at Pebble Beach during the August Monterey Car Week. Here are things we just found about the DeLorean Alpha5 Concept.

The original DeLorean Motor Company went out of business in 1982, years before it became the time traveling machine we know today. Although the DMC-12 is loved by car enthusiasts thanks to the films, in reality, it was a massively underpowered car with safety and quality issues. But British engineer Stephen Wynne bought the rights to the DeLorean in 1995 and started plotting its comeback.

It seems that dream is close to reality as the Texas-based company is bringing the icon back in a modernized, fully electric DMC guise. The brand is relaunching in the 2020s, and the Alpha5 will be its halo car.

While the new concept car shares some design elements and branding with the legendary car, that's about where the similarities end. This is an all-new car from a new car company without direct links to the company founded by John DeLorean in the '70s. Classic DMC, a service, parts, and restoration company that bought the branding rights has stakes in the new car but isn't involved in the company's operation.

This is a new chapter in the legend, and it comes in a reimagined, modern, futuristic, and high-performance package. John DeLorean's daughter Kat is critical of the Alpha5 design, and she worked with a team of designers and fans to create a render of what she believes would be the best way to honor the memory of her father's car company. She went ahead to rant on Instagram, asking people to stop associating the new car with her dad.

The hope is that the Alpha5 Concept will go into production sometime in the future. For now, it is just a concept and a preview of a would-be production grand tourer. It features a perfect mix of luxury with performance. Think of the Mercedes-AMG S63 Coupe, Porsche 911, or the Aston Martin DBS, all-powerful cars that can cruise vast distances in serene high comfort.

The new crop of grand tourers will come in electric form, and the Alpha5 will face stiff competition from cars like the Polestar 5 Grand Tourer, Porsche Taycan, and Audi E-Tron GT.

5 All-electric Powertrain

A 2.8-liter V6 powered the original DMC12 from the Peugeot-Renault-Volvo consortium. This time clean energy will enable trips to the future, with the Alpha5 coming with an unspecified electric powertrain. Electrek reports that the motor comes with a 100kW+ battery pack, which is impressive and in league with the largest packs in the business.

This doesn't mean DeLorean is a purely electric brand since they have announced ambitious plans to produce a sports car powered by a conventional V8 and an SUV running on hydrogen.

4 Range And Top Speed

EV Range is all the rave with electric cars, and range anxiety is top of concerns by EV critics. The more range new EVs can achieve, the more proponents they can win. Regardless, they are taking the market by storm, and the new Tesla Model Long Range is now capable of 405 miles. The Alpha5 promises a range of 300 miles+ between charges.

DeLorean will limit the top speed to 155 mph, and the Alpha5 will sprint from a stop to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds.

Italian automotive designer, Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign, is credited with designing iconic supercars and popular everyday cars. He has enjoyed a glorious career, and in 1999 he was crowned the Car Designer of the Century by a group of automotive journalists and industry leaders.

He was the designer behind the original DeLorean DMC12, and a team of designers, Italdesign, the company he co-founded, helped pen the Alpha5. Exterior designer Dario Lauriola claims the design team drew creative inspiration from the renowned heritage.

Gullwing doors are some of the coolest and most stylish features in any car, right beside pop-up headlights. They are arguably the best-looking doors and are also more practical by facilitating easier ingress and egress than butterfly doors on Lamborghini cars. True to the original car, the Alpha5 comes with gullwing doors, contributing to its sleek silhouette.

Once you open the door, you meet two low-slung rows of seats in a 2+2 format. This is a deviation from the original, which was a two-seater.
