There aren’t many automotive brands as iconic as AMG. With a deep history in performance and racing, the AMG division has been responsible for some of the most powerful sports cars on the market. While the AMG GT may grab headlines, the new Mercedes-AMG C 63 E Performance is bound to turn heads.
The new C 63 ditches the V8 from the last model and includes a 4-cylinder hybrid powertrain. However, the engine was built with help of the Mercedes F1 team to extract the most amount of performance possible. This makes the new C 63 one of the best hybrid performance cars on the market today.
Interested in learning more? You’re in the right place. Here’s everything you need to know about the new hybrid C 63 E Performance from Mercedes-AMG.
10 An Aggressive Upgrade
The new C 63 E Performance is a total upgrade from the previous model. This new C 63 is based on the fifth generation C Class and represents the modernization of the entire brand. At the core of this rebrand is the new E Performance technology.
This new technology has seen Mercedes cut the engine in half from a V8 to a 4-cylinder engine. However, the AMG team has managed to still produce more power out of the engine than the outgoing model. The new C 63 also upgrades the aerodynamics and interior of the sports sedan to bring it in line with the new design language from Mercedes.
9 Developed With The Mercedes F1 Team
Mercedes-AMG worked closely with the Mercedes F1 Team to help develop the new technology in the C 63 E Performance. You may notice that this is where the E Performance branding comes from as the Mercedes-AMG Formula 1 cars are named E Performance vehicles as well.
The hybrid components of the car were designed alongside the Formula 1 Team, but also the cooling and engine management system as well. This allows the sports sedan to leverage the hybrid powertrain for added performance rather than efficiency.
8 AMG Exterior
The exterior of the C 63 E Performance was designed to make the sedan stand out from the rest of the range. While the C 43 was also released alongside the C 63, the C 63 comes with a unique front end that helps it stand out.
The new C 63 features a vent in the hood for cooling. This gives the entire front end of the car a unique and aggressive look. Mercedes-AMG has also included vents and air ducts around the front and sides of the C 63 to help keep it as aerodynamic and thermally efficient as possible.
7 670 HP Powertrain
The new hybrid powertrain is by no means slow. Thanks to the engineers at Mercedes-AMG, the new C 63 E Performance manages to produce around 670 HP and 752 lb-ft of torque. This is a significant upgrade from the previous model’s 503 HP powertrain.
The previous model was a massive V8 that could accelerate from 0 to 60 in 3.7 seconds. The new C 63 E Performance can leverage the instant torque from the hybrid powertrain to accelerate from 0 to 60 in just 3.3 seconds. This highlights the impressive performance gains of the new package from Mercedes-AMG.
6 Variable All-Wheel-Drive
The C 63 comes with a variable all-wheel-drive system. This variable control system means that the onboard system can adjust the torque distribution perfectly to send the right amount of grip to the right tire at the right time.
This helps with wheelspin off the line but also allows you to consistently take more speed into every corner. This system is similar to the Quattro all-wheel-drive system from Audi as it can help compute the driving conditions ahead of you to adjust accordingly. This system can help with performance but also makes everyday driving smooth and comfortable.
5 Plug-In Hybrid Technology
The C 63 E Performance from Mercedes-AMG is a plug-in hybrid sports sedan. This means that you can charge the onboard battery and even drive in all-electric mode. While the car does let you drive very far, the battery and electric motor work in perfect harmony to deliver the most efficient drive possible.
The system included in the new C 63 is different from the systems in the latest BMW M3 and M4 models. BMW decided to switch their new performance vehicles to 48 V mild-hybrid systems, but they are not nearly as efficient as the plug-in hybrid models from Mercedes. In this way, the C 63 is by far the more futureproof model of the two.
4 Luxurious Interior
The interior of the C 63 is leagues ahead of the competition. This is true for the entire C Class from Mercedes as they have taken direct inspiration from the S Class. The interior is so premium in the entire C Class that it may be difficult to decide if you’re in the C Class or an S Class.
This new interior design language includes two massive screens for the driver and the center console along with ambient lighting and tons of premium-quality materials throughout the cabin. Both digital displays are connected to the latest MBUX system that pairs perfectly with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for added convenience.
3 Smart Driving Modes
The new Mercedes-AMG C 63 E Performance can be driven in electric-only mode. This saw the introduction of a new driving mode to the C 63 to sit alongside the eco and sports modes. While the hybrid technology delivers both performance and efficiency, the RACE mode showcases the capabilities of the new C 63 to its fullest.
The RACE mode sets up the car perfectly for track driving. This mode stiffens the suspension, speeds up the throttle response, and leverages the full power of the battery and electric motor to provide you with instant torque. This also engages the sports mode for the all-wheel-drive system so that you can remain agile when turning, braking, or accelerating.
2 Estate Model
The new AMG models are available as both sedans and estates. This is one of the most unique aspects of the new C 63 as it competes directly with the BMW M3 Touring and the RS6 Avant from Audi. While BMW fans had to wait a bit before the release of the M3 Touring, Mercedes has decided to release both models from the start.
The estate model comes with the same impressive powertrain but comes in a more practical design. This makes the estate model the perfect sports sedan for those who need a practical car but want to get something fun and powerful at the same time.
1 The Future Of AMG
The C 63 E Performance is a statement to the rest of the industry about where Mercedes is heading. While other brands may be dragging their feet to develop and release hybrid performance cars, Mercedes has made their intentions clear with the new C 63.
Mercedes has also broken the notion that the hybrid models will be purely for efficiency. By creating a new C 63 that is significantly more powerful than the outgoing V8 model, Mercedes is giving gearheads exactly what they want.
