The fastest production Porsche boasts a max output hovering at 700 hp. If you're seeking greater sports car numbers, you can approach automotive tuners and let them do their magic. In fact, a 2005 Porsche 911 (997.1) was splendidly tuned enough to become one of the fastest of its kind in the half mile during a recent drag race in Germany.

Updated January 2021: Since this story’s original posting, another Porsche 997 has risen to overtake the Porsche 9FF’s impressive half-mile time of 220.32 mph. A 997 Turbo built by ESMOTOR and Aim Performance ran 227.9 mph in the half mile at Johnny Bohmer Proving Grounds. Esmotor UK posted the new world record to its Facebook page on December 5, 2020.

Tuned to Over 1,800 HP

This Porsche 997 with hypercar power was tuned by 9FF Engineering of Dortmund, Germany, and specially engineered for Salvatore Forieri. How 9FF tuned this monstrosity remains unknown, but its engine does deliver a mind-boggling output of more than 1,800 horses.

Looking for the perfect venue to trumpet the huge firepower of his Porsche 9FF 997 Turbo, Forieri took part in the recently held SSC500 event – a gathering of high-powered cars across Europe – in Zweibrücken, Germany. He entered his 9FF 997 in the Unlimited Class, which featured the most powerful cars at SSC500.

Then history was driven, or written. As soon as the go-signal was given, the Porsche 9FF 997 Turbo dashed to 62 mph in 3.17 seconds and 124 mph in 5.93 seconds. Continuing to gain speed, the 9FF 997 Turbo reached the quarter mile in 9.15 seconds, as shown in a video posted to the SCC 500's Facebook page.

By the time the 1,800-hp Porsche crossed the half-mile mark, 9FF Engineering released the 997 Turbo's claimed final top speed of 220.32 mph (354.58 km/h) via Facebook. They claim to have submitted their files to Leitspeed for satellite confirmation. According to those results, Forieri didn't just win his class, but also appears to become the fastest half-mile car at SSC500 (as of October 2020).

Fastest Half-Mile 997 (As of Oct 2020)

Has there ever been a Porsche 997 that's gone as fast as 220.32 mph in the half mile? 9FF Engineering posted on Facebook that the 9FF 997.1 Turbo "Salvatore" is "the fastest 997 Porsche in the 1/2 mile in the world." Without a doubt, this Porsche is a beast.
