Modifying a car is something that can offer a lot of joy and satisfaction, especially if the modifications are vast and time-consuming. When finished, you will be left with an incredible feeling. How about swapping the engine out of a car and replacing it with something bigger? Better still, what if that car was actually a classic 1970s Toyota pickup truck? That’s what brodrdude has done, showing off his 1979 Toyota Short Bed Pickup fitted with a thunderous Dodge big block engine.

This Truck Is Going Through A Major Restoration

The truck is going through quite the restoration, and the owner is keen to point out that it is not finished and that there is plenty still to do. For example, a lot of re-wiring still needs to be done to the car to get up and running properly. As can be heard when the truck is started up, it starts easily and produces an amazing soundtrack when revved. The revving has to be done manually from under the hood, as the accelerator isn’t fixed up just yet!

The 440 engine was first introduced by Chrysler back in 1965 and was produced until 1975. More modern iterations of the engine have come from Mopar, this engine looks to be much older though, and looks to have come out of a classic car. The short but sweet video of the engine bay shows off the wiring layout of the truck and we get a brief look inside the cabin which is pretty bare, so this pickup is far from being able to go out on the roads cruising around.

The Forerunner Of The Modern Hilux

It is interesting to note that 1979 was the first year that Toyota started to produce their mini four-wheel-drive pickup trucks. These were the initial versions of the legendary Toyota Hilux, a truck that Top Gear claims is totally indestructible. While there is clearly a lot of work still to do on this truck, it is a project that is certainly worth keeping an eye on and finding out what its ultimate purpose is set to be.
