American consumers will have to be forgiven for not knowing about the Audi RS6 as the model has only been shipped to the States once, in sedan form. But in foreign markets, the RS6 in both sedan and station wagon (or Avant) form has earned a reputation that stems from Audi’s commitment to consistently pack enormous engines under the hood of its mid-range luxury tourers.

Now, German-based tuners ABT Sportsline have unveiled their take on Audi’s already impressive line, taking a previously modified RS6 Avant and adding an electric power plant to complement the standard gasoline-powered drivetrain. The resulting prototype is called it the RS6, a hybrid station wagon with power stats that best the original Bugatti Veyron: a claimed 1,018 horsepower and 952 lb-ft of torque.

From the factory, the RS6 features a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 that cranks out up to 597 hp and 553 lb-ft, so ABT’s RS6-E just about doubles the output, while simultaneously delivering the instantly available low-end torque bump of the electric motor. That power maxes out at speeds above 62 miles per hour, where the full 288 hp and 233 lb-ft become available.

The Avant weighs in at nearly 4,300 pounds in stock form, but its beefy engine and Audi’s legendary Quattro all-wheel drive allow it to sprint to 60 miles per hour in 3.7 seconds, all while providing plenty of space for gear and the wide range of luxury amenities standard on the German manufacturer's line-topping models.

ABT Sportline previously released their strictly gasoline upgraded RS6, which combines extensive use of carbon fiber inside and out, custom wheels, and performance enhanced mechanicals to an ECU tune, allowing the otherwise stock powerplant to crank 705 horses and 650 lb-ft. The RS6-E, meanwhile, receives similar performance and design additions alongside the hybrid installation.

Modification of RS6 models will be limited to 50 in RS6+ trim, though ABT has yet to confirm production figures for the RS6-E prototype. But with a 0-60 time cut down to 3.3 seconds on the way to a top speed just shy of 200 miles per hour, expect buyers to line up down the block for a chance to own the world’s most powerful, most efficient family hauler.
