Bugatti's aim with the Chiron Pur Sport was to let its driver exploit it around corners, with immense acceleration at his disposal and driving dynamics unique to the Pur Sport.

Since production is nearing its halfway point, and the 30th car having been delivered to its owner, Bugatti decided to set up a small performance, pushing the Pur Sport sideways, 'drifting the C', similar to the one on the side of the extreme supercar.

The track was made ready until the next day. It was a big moment for Bugatti, as the Pur Sport was about to pull off a magical maneuver, all thanks to the car's exhilarating performance and talent. The advanced four-wheel-drive system sends 1,479hp and 1,180 lb-ft of torque through one of the most advanced engines in the world: the W16 8.0-liter.

The Challenge: A Controlled Four-Wheel-Drift

The expert driver - also a senior Bugatti development and chassis engineer - is about to be tasked with the challenge of drifting the Chiron Pur Sport, making an arc that resembles the Bugatti C-line.

The signature C-line has influenced Bugatti's elegance in styling for decades now; it adds length to the car from the sides while giving it a flowing impression when it's stationary. It goes back to Bugattis as early as the Type 50 and Type 57 series.

After the W16 engine is fired up, the Pur Sport launches eagerly, with all four tires whipping up smoke as it picks up the pace and quickly shifts through the gears.

The driver turns the wheel as the Pur Sport gently eases itself into a drift, after a prod on the throttle. When the driver counter-steers into the turn, you'll see smoke coming out of all four wheel arches, putting on a show of some kind.

The driver, skillfully, gives the throttle and steering subtle inputs as the Pur Sport completes its intended drift challenge, leaving a large C-line marked on the tarmac.

With all that power and the four-wheel-drive system, the Pur Sport is built for tight corners - and like all Chiron models, the C-line on the Pur Sport fits in well with the entire profile. The sideline C also plays a part in improving performance parameters, because its reason for existence was to increase ventilation in Bugatti's 16-cylinder cars. Smooth airflow reaches the window level of the Chiron Pur Sport from behind the A-pillar. The C-line draws air and sends it via the wheel arch, which is then pushed out of the rear. The sideline is achieved with the use of a 2.8-meter strip made of a unique aluminum alloy.

Exceptional performance is available at your disposal in the Chiron Pur Sport. The weight of the car has been reduced by about 110 lbs, while its downforce capacity has been increased, achieving a sporty character and the best possible suspension setup.

Sven Bohnhorst, the skilled driver behind the experiment, is amazed at how the Pur Sport's all-wheel-drive kept the slide in control. However, he also states that it is up to the driver to decide if they'd like to slip the rear axle to have the car turn or stabilize the whole thing with more slip up-front while balancing it only with the throttle. Even all four wheels can be had spinning at the same time, he says.

The Pur Sport's 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox is probably the most advanced in the Chiron line-up because the grease monkeys at Bugatti have optimized multiple components, while the gears were shortened too.

The hypercar's other big advantage is its chassis, which features 65% firmer springs up-front and 33% firmer springs in the back. There's even an adaptive damping control strategy set more towards performance and heavily tuned camber values that ensure better handling, more performance, and better agility around corners.

The Chiron Pur Sport is known to hold on to the tarmac like a leech because of its lower unsprung mass. The lightweight magnesium wheels save 35 lbs, further adding strength to the connection between the driver, car, and the road.

In a straight line, the Chiron Pur Sport can accelerate from 0-62mph in just 2.3 seconds. The shorter gear ratios help it launch quickly. This is no regular Chiron. The Pur Sport has been designed and developed to put up with the most extreme situations on a track, with finesse and ease thrown in for good measure.

The Pur Sport was put through the challenge in a safe environment, with everyone trained to carry out what was necessary. The C-line drift took place at a track that only Bugatti had access to then.
