This video of racing Formula Drift cars is so smooth it looks like it’s straight out of a video game.

We love Formula Drift. Each car is an insanely tuned version of something you’d find running around on the streets of LA, such as Corvettes, Mustangs, Subarus and BMWs both old and new. But each one has been given an engine swap, a pair of turbochargers, and something close to 1,000 hp.

It takes a lot of power to go sideways instead of straight.

One the problems with Formula Drift, however, is the smoke. With each car producing a giant plume of smoke every time it rounds a bend, a race track can become a hazy cloud that makes it difficult for spectators to see their crazy maneuvers. Which may or may not be a problem, depending on the number of people vaping in the bleachers.

But there is one surefire way to get a good view of the action, and that’s simply to get closer to it. Normally, that’s a pretty dangerous proposition considering how much power each of these cars sports and the fact that at any moment a screaming tire can come shooting off their rear wheels.

That’s where drones come in.

Racing drones are carbon-fiber frames built around four high-powered electric motors and a camera. The pilot sees out of that camera by wearing a VR-style headset, essentially turning the drone into a real-life video game. And being that close to the action means that the drone can make for some insane footage.

Normally, racing drones compete in extremely difficult race courses, zooming around at speeds close to 60 mph while making instant stops and hairpin turns. Just watching them can be dizzying, but they’re the perfect platform to get up close and personal with drift racers.

This particular race drone, courtesy of Johnny Schaer (Or JohnnyFPV), comes equipped with a GoPro Hero7 that takes footage at incredible speeds to make each image incredibly smooth--so smooth that it looks like you’re watching a video game instead of real life.

So enjoy this one-of-a-kind experience of flying through a Formula Drift car’s tire plume. It doesn’t get any better than this.
