The electric revolution is very much in full swing now, with car company’s all over the world going for an electric future. But electric power has not only brought modern cars into full focus. It has allowed an alternative way to go about restomodding a car, taking an old machine and updating it into something new. And electric restomods are starting to take off. Such as this one. This is a Volkswagen Type 2 Double Cab pickup truck, with dual electric motors.

Driven On BBC Top Gear

EV West and the EV Show are talking through their creation, which has had over 40,000 miles on the clock since they created it. From the front, you wouldn’t be able to tell that this is anything special aside from the fact that Type 2 Double Cabs are not that common. As you walk around the side though, the Porsche 5-spoke wheels tip you off that there might be something more than meets the eye.  It has been featured on Jay Leno’s channel and has even been driven by the Stig from BBC’s Top Gear, so EV West decided it was finally time they showed it off for themselves.

The truck helped develop their dual-motor system, something that EV West also used in their own Pikes Peak hill climb EV. The batteries are located under the horsehair rear seats, . Each unit is a 3kw hour battery, with 18 of them located in the VW. The truck has about 180 miles of range, and with the placement of the batteries being low and central to the axles, it gives it remarkable handling.

A Rustic Look And Repurposed Filler Cap

Outside, the truck has a weathered rustic look, with the original gas cap for the car being repurposed as a cover for the charging port. It has dual charging, which allows for a lower charge rate for day-to-day use which is kinder on the battery. A second charger allows for faster charging, activated via a dash switch, and it cuts the charging time of the truck in half. These are just a few cool features of this truck, and the full video will of course be linked into this piece.
