In the world of supercars, very few hold as much prestige as the McLaren F1. Highly coveted, the F1 is the fastest naturally aspirated car to this day and in the world of supercars, still stands the test of time of being painstakingly beautiful. VinWiki founder Ed Bolian has even said the car is the "end all, be all dream car" for many enthusiasts, but until finding out about chassis 39, he never could imagine being able to even own one.

McLaren F1: What Is Chassis 39?

Even the McLaren CEO at the time couldn't drive the McLaren F1 chassis 39. Finished in Brazilian Brown with red interior and gold wheels, his wife allegedly said the car was too ugly to be seen in. After a brief period owning it, the car was given to another person with it still listed for sale by McLaren in the UK. In 1997, the car was sold into Mexico, but it is unclear how it got there. Some speculation is that a dealer in Texas sold it, while others claim it was stolen into Brazil illegally. However, the history if the car had only just begun at that point.

Bought By El Chapo

The car ended up in the care of a man who went by the nickname "El Roba Chivas," a man highly praised by Joaquin Guzman (El Chapo) for his drug running capabilities. Famous for selling over 220 tons of cocaine for a total of $300 million, El Roba Chivas was killed in 1997, right when the car was apparently bought by El Chapo himself. The car was seen very infrequently, but was generally seen in and around Sinaloa in Mexico.

Thanks to a tip from a viewer, Bolian received information about Mexico's missing F1. According to the fan, the car had at one point been placed under a tarp somewhere in Sinaloa or one of the surrounding areas. In 2000, the family assumed to have possession of the car contacted McLaren to get another key made, and on the second attempt were told it would cost between $200,000-$300,000 to do so. This unfortunately led to the car sitting motionless under this tarp for over 16 years.

Pricey Repair Bill

Bolian sees this car as his "only chance to buy a McLaren F1" even with the car being more than his net worth. The car is assumed to need extensive repairs, including a full restoration, as well as the area the car is in not being safe by any means because of its ties to the drug trade. Some have said the car is now in Mexico City, while others have said it was brought into the UK once again by a collector. "No one knows where chassis 39 is,” Bolian said. “But over the past nine months I have truly enjoyed the treasure hunt to try and find it."
