There are a ton of choices for reliable utility ATVs that feature substantial power and comfortable design. Quality, reliability, power, and tow capacity are just a few important variables to assess amongst the numerous market offerings.

The Can-Am Outlander boasts class-leading tow capacity and horsepower, becoming the ultimate utility ATV. Although its price tag is slightly higher than competitors, such as the Polaris Sportsman, its quality and 91hp engine offerings are unmatched.

This ATV can be a durable choice for off-roading, hunting, or towing items up to about 1,650 pounds. The Outlander is a rugged utility vehicle with a venturous personality that goes above and beyond.

Here, we will enumerate the factors that make the Can-Am Outlander stand out from the competition.

Engine & Power

The Can-Am Outlander XT has one of the widest variety of engine offerings available. Customers can choose between a 650cc, 850cc, or 976cc Rotax V-twin. All of these are liquid-cooled and offer electronic fuel injection (EFI). The 850 and 1000R models add Intelligent Throttle Control (iTC). With a dry weight ranging from 749 to 826lbs, this ATV achieves a substantial power-to-weight ratio. The power of the XT is clearly evident upon engagement of the throttle as the vehicle breaks loose without losing traction or stability.

The 91hp 1000R engine is a powerful choice that includes CVT with engine braking. The closest competition for this type of power is the 2021 Polaris Sportsman XP 1000 Trail with 90 horsepower. Operators can easily toggle between 2WD and 4WD using the selection mechanism. Tri-Mode Dynamic Power Steering provides increased handling abilities for when you get stuck in difficult terrain. Power output is maximized at lower RPMs, which can be incredibly useful when towing.

For off-road performance, an auto-locking front differential is standard on all Outlander XT models. The double-wishbone suspension in the front includes a sway bar and provides 9.2” of travel. In the rear, a torsional trailing-arm independent suspension gives 9.9” of travel. FOX shocks come standard on the 1000R, giving it a comfortable and resilient ride.

Stopping power is derived from 214mm vented disc brakes in the front and rear, both with hydraulic twin-piston calipers. ITP Terracross tires come standard on the Outlander, which are more than sufficient for off-road handling. Many have praised these tires’ ability to provide superior traction and performance on all surfaces. Their size efficiently complements the dimensions of the ATV, 26” x 8” x 14” and 26” x 10” x 14” in the front and rear.

Towing & Cargo Capacity

The Outlander is larger than some ATVs, but its rigidity compensates for its size. Its total dimensions come in at 86 x 48 x 49.5”, small enough to be maneuverable yet substantial enough for towing and carrying cargo. The front and rear racks on the Can-Am can carry 100 and 200lb, respectively. These racks are made from high-strength materials and feature an accessory system that allows easy attachment of cargo boxes, coolers, and speakers.

There is an additional 5.7-gallon storage compartment enclosed in a water-resistant design. The towing capacity is class-leading at 1,650lbs. It has a 300lb advantage over its closest competition, the Polaris Sportsman. All of this power is complemented by a 3,500lb winch mounted to the front. Each model of the Outlander offers a 1,650lb towing capacity (from the 650 to the 1000cc).

Features & Comfortable Design

The Outlander features an 11” ground clearance, just 0.5” shorter than the Polaris Sportsman XP. Riders have commented on the comfortable seating of the Can-Am and its ergonomic feel. All sizes of riders can feel steady on the Outlander, which maintains its stability to reduce the likelihood of rollovers.

An anti-theft RF Digitally Encoded Security System comes standard on the ATV, which means it can only be started with the RF-embedded key. One of the most advantageous features of Can-Am’s design is its splash protection. Mudguards are placed at strategic locations on the chassis along with hand guards and wind deflectors. The luminous 4.5” digital display is intuitive and includes typical statistics such as speed, mileage, gear position, and fuel.

The Outlander XT offers significant value and has a starting price of $10,499. Can-Am offers a line of Outlander ATVs that have similar statistics for lower prices. The base Outlander starts at $8,499 and includes a choice of a 650 or 850cc engine.

Prices for the Can-Am line are generally higher than the average competition, however their brand is known to offer superior quality. This attention to detail is exemplified through the build of each Can-Am ATV, with a “passion for perfection” according to ATV.com. This company was also the first to implement air shocks and tri-mode power steering.  This 4x4 vehicle proves its value through attractive styling, thoughtful engineering, and class-leading capabilities.
