For the automobile industry, 2020 has been a glorious year. Mega brands have launched some terrific new machines in a bid to outdo each other. Sports cars have been the most talked-about car models since eternity and 2020 has been no different. This calendar year has witnessed the launch of some stunning sports cars - each one with its own USP.

Among some of the big names that have launched this year is the hyper monster SSC Tuatara. The successor to the Ultimate Aero, the SSC Tuatara is a sports car designed, developed, and manufactured by the American automobile manufacturer, SSC North America.

Apart from some of its stunning attributes and features, this SSC monster is renowned to be the fastest sports car of 2020. Not only is the SSC Tuatara the numero uno among 2020 sports cars, but it can also reportedly clock a one-way top speed of just over 340 miles per hour, smashing the previous top speed record held by the Koenigsegg Agera RS. Only time will tell if it can actually pull it off.

Let's have a closer look at the fastest sports of 2020.

Elegance Meets Unprecedented Performance

The Tuatara is a fruitful harvest of years of meticulous engineering and design at SSC, North America. This dominating speed monster is built to conquer. Built beyond the ordinary, this sports car uses flat-plane crank configurations. You'd imagine that would make the car rough and torquey. However, the Tuatara is a surprisingly smooth and deluxe ride.

The hyper-car has a Special 5.9 liter (twin-turbocharged) V8 engine at the heart. This engine was specially designed in collaboration with Nelson Racing Engines, and you'd say they did a fine job building this supercar. The sturdy engine comes weighing in at about 428 lbs, while the car boasts a dry weight of 2,750 lbs. With any lesser weight, the car would probably fly.

The Tuatara uses a 7-speed robotic-manual transmission. It comes with a sub 100milli second shifting pattern that offers comfort and control at all times. The hypercar boasts a 366 cubic-inch displacement. The engine has an impressive compression ratio of 8.80:1.

The Tuatara is 182.4 inches long and about 81.3 inches wide — which is pretty impressive and compensating, given the short height of the car. The extraordinary aerodynamics of the car help propel it to the speed of a jet on wheels. The designers ingeniously crafted an active rear wing to help cut through the wind. The 18 sq ft frontal area is curved towards the front, to help the car surge through the wind like a bullet. The car was able to achieve a best-in-class 0.279 drag coefficient (which shows how likely the car is to be affected or slowed down by the force of the wind). No wonder this bad boy can fly.

The makers made sure there is no room for complaints. The SSC Tuatara has the meanest technology at its disposal. The driver display is a top-quality Digital HMI — one of the best in class. The center console is equipped with a classy touch screen which provides for your safety, navigation, and infotainment on the go. Comfort is always in the cards with the Tuatara. The speedy hypercar comes standard with a climate-controlled air-conditioning system to ensure that the temperature of the car is always automatically adjusted to best suit the climate.

The car leaves no room for blind spots while you drive. The high-quality side cameras on your car always provide vigilance and ensure safe driving. If you're a race-gamer and a car lover, you're likely to fall in love with the tilt and telescope steering wheel. Entertainment and infotainment features are available on the go, with premium speakers installed to win you over. The sequential shifting-lights add to the utility and style quotient of the car.

The American supercar reportedly toppled all speed records for a production car. SSC claimed that the Tuatara recorded a one-way top speed of 331.15 miles per hour and a two-way average of 316.11 miles per hour. Piloted by British racing driver, Oliver Webb, the Tuatara reportedly ran a seven-mile stretch of closed road outside of Las Vegas, Nevada, near Pahrump on State Route 160. If confirmed true by an independent source, the SSC supercar will become the fastest car of all time, easily beating the previous record held by the Koenigsegg Agera RS.

Whether or not it takes over the Koenigsegg Agera RS' record is another topic but there's no denying that the SSC Tuatara is the quickest car of 2020. While the makers have not quoted the Tuatara's 0 to 60 time, it can go from 60 to 120 miles per hour in just 2.5 seconds as per a Motor1 report.

A Versatile Monster: Multiple Driving Modes

The SSC Tuatara is a versatile beast, designed to adapt to any location or terrain, at the touch of a button. That’s right, this hypercar has been designed to ride in different modes to suit the type of ride you’re enjoying.

First up is the Sport Mode that allows the car to shift characteristics through the robotized manual transmission to become more docile, and city-street ready. In this mode, the suspension is actuated to a front ride height of 4 inches and a rear height of 4.5 inches.

The Track Mode unleashes the beast in the car. The front ride height is lowered to 2.74 inches and the rear height is lowered to 3.25 inches. The rear wing acts as a control surface, while airflow and well-balanced precision down-force mean speed, braking, and transmission is optimized to maximum capacity.

Lastly, the Front Lift Mode is all about comfort and convenience. The front suspension is lifted by an additional 40mm, to allow clearance over speed bumps or rough surfaces.

Previewed in concept form at 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, the SSC Tuatara's production version was eventually made official seven years after its concept debut, in August 2018. The SSC hypercar takes inspiration from the aerospace industry. Guess who's the brain behind this speed monster? It's none other than Jason Castriota, one of the most popular designers in the automobile sphere.
