The Mercedes Simplex Vision is unlike anything we've seen before.

These days, concept cars are often showcased in complexity with sophisticated technology and designs. They're aimed at the future, which is why Mercedes-latest Benz's concept is a refreshing change that aims to simplify things.

The Vision Mercedes Simplex concept vehicle is based on the motorized carriage look that this renowned brand started with its 1901 Mercedes 35 PS.

With its distinct appearance and style, this model drew everyone's attention. The iconic carriage of the Simplex concept vehicle, Mercedes-Benz now pays homage to this heritage.

The Mercedes 35 PS of 1901, a two-seat racer built by Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG), became the first vehicle to bear the Mercedes brand from the insistence and continuous haranguing of automobile dealer Emil Jellinek. The design is regarded as the first modern automobile that ushered in a new era in vehicle design.

Let’s take a closer look at this marvelous concept car.

The Luxurious Design Of The Mercedes Simplex

The "Vision Mercedes Simplex" is a two-seater with freestanding wheels, an alternative engine, a new User Interface, and a stunning design that reinterprets the original Simplex.

The conventional example of the strongly vertical color separation between a white front part and a black rear piece is followed. The transparent wheel trims and the aerodynamic surface areas between the front wheels and the vehicle body symbolize lightness and efficiency.

The interplay between simply and powerfully created surfaces and unique technical features drives the whole sculpture.

Brief History On The Car That Started All Of This

The Mercedes 35 HP, which inspired the Vision Simplex, was completely different from other cars that came out during that era. While the designs of the vehicles were related to carriages, the 35 HP had a never-before-seen architecture with a flat structure, an engine installed low in the frame, and a radiator integrated into the front. This layout went on to become standard for decades to come.

In 1902, the Simplex road car was born from the racing vehicle. The 35 HP featured a 5.9-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 35 horsepower and a five-speed transmission and is now regarded as the first modern car. The 35 HP won Race Week and encouraged other major manufacturers to adopt a similar design, thanks to visionary Emil Jelinek's proposal and the name Mercedes.

In 1903, a 9.2-liter four-banger with 60 hp was added to the lineup. Because it was launched before Rolls Royce debuted their car in 1904, the Mercedes Simplex laid the groundwork for the luxury sector.

Interior Of The Vision Mercedes Simplex

The whole interior is a tribute to Mercedes Benz' great past and the DNA of the Simplex racing vehicle, which has been methodically reduced while remaining extremely emotively attractive.

It starts with the smooth transition from the outside, which is aided by the lack of a windshield, pillars, or doors. The engine hood and the dashboard have a flute-like transition, and the dash and side panels have a continuous look that goes into the footwell.

On the dashboard, there's a digital clock with an analog design at the top and four trim control panels below. Both feature a Rose Gold accent and are inspired by motorcycle and nautical motifs. The dash surface on either side of the clock may be used as a display to provide important vehicle information as required. It displays speed and navigation data, as well as vehicle information that you may need in specific circumstances.

The steering column, just like in vintage vehicles, is inspired by nautical motifs and exits from the floor. This column, on the other hand, is obviously finer since it has an upscale, polished look and is flanked at the bottom by equally shiny pedals.

Azure Blue upholstery covers the floor and bench seats, creating a dramatic contrast against the white and black body parts. The bench seat is inspired by high-end furniture, yet it isn't your average bench. Rather than being attached to the floor, it is integrated into the chassis and body.

The Vision Simplex design includes hand-made Chesterfield quilting that makes the bench seat seem like a very costly sofa. Needless to say, this open-air cottage seems like a really pleasant location to spend time in.

Exterior Of The Vision Mercedes Simplex

The exterior design of the vehicle is straightforward and clean. There are no complicated lines, sharp angles, scallops, or dents to be found. This design, like the racecar that inspired it, shines through with its simplicity and modern yet clean visual features.

This modern design consists mainly of a chassis with a wraparound bonnet over the engine and a tiny rear section to house the seats. The seatback actually comprises the back portion of the body in this case, which is an uncommon design choice for a vehicle of any era.

The concept’s front fascia is simply a grille. There are no lights and no bumpers, only steering arms that extend from the bonnet to support the wheels. The Vision Simplex looks like a hot-rod because it lacks headlights, a bumper, and tiny fenders above the wheels.

The radiator has a rosé gold frame that evokes the older model's bronze radiator grille, as well as an opening in the form of a large lens-shaped Black Panel/3D display. It features the same old-school "Mercedes" lettering as the original car, as well as blue tri-star insignia. It also has animations that provide information about the vehicle's condition, but the German firm did not elaborate on the subject.

Perfect hand craftsmanship is also visible on the leather bag which finishes off the tail end of the vehicle body and – with its modern interpretation - is similarly themed on the vintage vehicle.

We love how the Vision Simplex effectively modernizes the kind of towering, gawky proportions that went out of style more than a century ago, and we love that it's a bright, whimsical concept vehicle.

The Vision Mercedes Simplex can get away with a lot of omissions as a concept car, including headlights and essential safety equipment, which gives it a very attractive appearance.
