Mercedes has a long history of making automobiles. While the brand is now synonymous with being the leader in luxury and innovation, a lot of the brand’s core ideas have changed over the decade.

One of the most beautiful cars ever to grace the roads was the 300 SL Gullwing. And the legacy continued, with the SL moniker adorning a good sum of cars bearing the three-pointed star.

However, demand for the iconic SL nametag diminished, and Mercedes slowly lost interest in the model thanks to several 4-seater drop-tops flooding the market. The previous generation of the SL was introduced back in 2013 and sat a notch below its competitors. With the SL-Class barely creating any waves, it’s high time Mercedes did something about it.

Enter the seventh-gen SL-Class; it looks and feels more promising than the model it replaces. Interestingly, this time instead of Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes- AMG is in charge of the build.

With an expected price north of $175,000, the 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL 63 Roadster is quite a pricey toy.

Here’s us rounding up everything we know and love about the all-new SL.

With a wealth of history backing the nameplate, Mercedes had to bring their A-game. And they did. The new SL 63 is quite a stunning-looking thing. Make no mistake, this new Merc will turn heads.

It’s long, low, and wide. The design is sharper and less bulbous than its predecessor. The aggression is similar to that of the AMG GT but turned up quite a bit. The rear has a lot of resemblance to the 4-door AMG GT 63, which is not a bad thing. You get 19-inch rims as standard, but the SL 63 does have the option of 21-inch AMG-style rims.

A soft-top roadster, the new SL has quite a snazzy roof-opening mechanism. It’s quite fast, and the whole roof can open/ retract in around 15 seconds. Other exterior highlights are most AMG styling elements commonly found sprinkled on most modern Mercs.

As you may know, AMG ditched the V12 last year, with the S65 Final Edition being the swansong to the powerplant. So, 12-cylinders did not make its way into the SL. Instead, it’s the familiar 585 horsepower 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that takes care of mobility. As a torque-rich motor, thrust is aplenty. A 0-60mph sprint takes 3.6 seconds, and the 2022 SL 63 can carry its mass to a top speed of 196 mph.

A 9-speed Multi-clutch transmission sends power to all four wheels via AMG’s trick 4matic+ system. Mercedes says that it’s a heavily rear-drive biased AWD system. Also, rear-wheel steer is an addition on the new SL. This should help with low-speed maneuverability and high-speed stability.

In other news, with the upcoming AMG GT 73e 4-door expecting a monstrous 800 hp unit, we reckon the motor-assisted powertrain could end up in the SL with a similar 73e name tag.

Aside from the powerplant, the SL 63 utilizes a new rear-wheel-drive platform dubbed MSA (Modular Sports Architecture). Employing a revised architecture means the new SL 63 is now more dynamically capable as well as being relatively light. Since the MSA platform relies more on a low weight philosophy, extensive use of aluminum and materials of similar properties have been administered. Another takeaway from this is that the new generation of AMG GTs will also employ the MSA architecture.

2022 Mercedes-AMG SL 63: Interior and Comfort

The SL Roadster is a 2+2 convertible, as opposed to the previous few generations, which were strictly a 2- seater. Although, the setup is slightly more comfortable than, say, the rear seats of a 911. Siding with roomier rear seats seems logical, since this move will help the SL fill whatever gap is left by the S-Class convertible.

The interior looks more like the newly introduced W223 S-Class. The 12.3-inch infotainment screen takes center stage. The turbine-like air vents with clever bits of interior lighting are quite eye-catching as well. On the technology front, Merc’s latest MBUX software embedded infotainment system leads the charge, along with a host of other intelligent driver-assist tech. All sorts of fancy electronic wizardry are made available in the new SL.

On the GT side of things, the SL sports a luxurious interior with the finest materials, as is the norm with high-end Mercs. However, the SL-Class adopts a fabric roof as opposed to the complicated hardtop of previous generations. The soft top setup is a lot less heavy while offering a bit more trunk space, keeping it in line with the entire design ethos.

Overall, the new SL 63 is a fine replacement to the AMG GTC. It’s a grand slam in terms of performance, sophistication, and technology. Is it miles ahead of the AMG GT R? No, but it sure has presence, and you wouldn’t be disappointed if you went ahead and bought one.
