The internet has become chock-full of videos featuring happy sports car owners drag racing their toys and plenty of YouTube channels have popped up doing the same thing with new cars on loan from manufacturers, as well. But no matter how fun it might be to watch a Tesla dominate a legit supercar off the line, the truth is that most videos fail to mention even what tires the cars are using — and tires are the single most important element in performance. But anyone interested in doing any actual drag racing can spend plenty of money building up a fun car once the tires are straightened out, or they can just bid on this 1939 Chevrolet Pro Street build currently listed for sale on the auction website Bring a Trailer.
Not A Garage Queen
Unlike the never-ending parade of Porsches and six-figure collectibles that make up the majority of Bring a Trailer's listings these days, this Chevy has been purpose-built and has plenty of battle wounds to prove its might. The exterior features a laser-cut grille, a removable one-piece front end built out of steel, a massive rear spoiler, and a Drogue parachute.
Under The Hood
Motivation comes courtesy of a supercharged 355ci Chevrolet V8 that was built with a hydraulic camshaft from Crane, a steel crankshaft, GM ZZ4 cylinder heads, and Keith Black pistons. The setup sends power to the wider-than-wide rear rubber through GM's venerable 4L80E automatic gearbox on the way to a nine-inch Ford rear end equipped with 4.86 gearing and a locking differential.
Ready To Race
The interior has been stripped to save weight and make room for the frame reinforcements and roll cage. Bucket seats, a floor shifter, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel make up the amenities — anything more would just slow this beast down. Bidding is open now with six days remaining until the final gavel.
