Since the day that an unknown journalist discovered that photographs of famous people sell publications, celebrities and the paparazzi have had an antagonistic relationship. Encouraged by the potential to sell unique photos of superstars in embarrassing situations, paparazzi have developed into an aggressive group of photographers. They stalk celebrities everywhere they go, willing to take the shot at any cost. Unfortunately, they sometimes take risks that put those around them in danger.
A celebrity publicist commented: “I've had loads of [scary] experiences with paparazzi. There is no stopping them. I had a client who had people sitting outside her house, and when she drove out in her car, one pap [paparazzo] was so keen to get the shots that he was driving down the wrong side of the road beside her.”
Although many emerging celebrities will use the photos to help further their careers, eventually, they reach a point where privacy becomes more important. Over the years, numerous celebrities have lost their cool when encountering paparazzi—some of them multiple times, like Kanye West and Alec Baldwin.
The pressure of constant surveillance is too much for some famous people. A few have been charged for attacking photographers after they had been intentionally goaded. “Pap say things that are so [awful]. They want a reaction and if the celeb attacks them even better,” explains a celebrity PR representative. “They want the celebrity to lash out or get upset or pull a face.”
Frequently, celebrities are photographed with their cars and doing everyday things like running errands, going to the grocery store, or sometimes misbehaving. The following are 24 photos that were taken of celebrities and their cars without being aware of the photographer.
24 Alex Gerrard in Tights Leaving the Gym
This English model and fashion columnist for the Daily Mirror may not be aware she is being photographed after her workout at the gym, but she has nothing to hide. The wife of Steven Gerrard, an English professional football manager and former player who manages the Scottish Premiership club Rangers, she has been described as a leading WAG (wives and girlfriends) of the England national football team, along with women such as Coleen Rooney and Victoria Beckham. Alex drives an ultra-exclusive, Overfinch-modified Land Rover. The luxury aftermarket SUV typically features both visual and mechanical custom upgrades and Overfinch often limits the number of modified cars to less than 100 per year, with no two having the same specifications.
23 Britney Spears Meltdown
Britney Spears appears to have her life back in order after a long history of apparent substance abuse and frequent stays at rehab centers. The most notable incident was her infamous head-shaving breakdown of 2007 when she attacked a paparazzo's SUV with an umbrella. Certainly aware of one photographer’s presence, her mental state at the time may have prevented her from noticing the other paparazzi in the area (or perhaps she just didn’t care). Paparazzo Daniel Ramos, the photographer that was attacked by the singer 12 years ago, was spotted at LAX in 2017 toting the green umbrella, a piece of pop culture history. He reportedly put it up for auction, and while the broken umbrella may have fetched thousands, it is no longer useful as protection on a rainy day.
22 Ashley Tisdale & Vanessa Hudgens in a Porsche 911
Actresses and good friends Ashley Tisdale and Vanessa Hudgens head to the gym together in West Hollywood, California, using a Porsche 911. Although they were caught on camera unaware, it is no secret the two actresses have a long-term friendship. It started 2006 when both stared in the musical television film, High School Musical, playing fan-favorites sweet Gabriella Montez and sassy Sharpay Evans. After appearing in three High School Musical films, traveling the world, and playing Catholic schoolgirls on The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, both pursued music as well as acting. Tisdale’s debut album, Headstrong (2007), went gold, featuring the single "He Said She Said." Hudgens’ debut solo album, "V" which stands for Vanessa, officially sold 500,000 copies and was certified gold for the first time in 2007.
21 Kate Walsh refuels her Porsche 911 Carrera S
Kate Walsh refuels her 350-hp Porsche 911 Carrera S. Best known for her role as Dr. Addison Montgomery on the ABC television dramas Private Practice and Grey's Anatomy, Kate has had numerous film and TV roles during her career. Her first significant television appearance came on The Drew Carey Show in 1995. She portrayed Drew's girlfriend, Niki Fifer, a woman struggling with her weight. Later she played the role of Carol Nelson in HBO's The Mind of the Married Man in the 2001 television series. Walsh describes her humble beginnings: “My very first job was a cashier at Burger King in Tucson, Arizona. And I occasionally worked the drive-thru. I'd go wherever I was needed! My second job was at Dairy Queen. I stayed in the fast food royalty.”
20 Lindsay Lohan and Her Porsche
A photographer caught Lindsay Lohan getting out of her Porsche Carrera after parking it on a Southern California suburban street. A child actress turned teen idol, Lohan has starred in over twenty films. Her breakthrough came in the remake of Walt Disney Pictures’ film The Parent Trap (1998). The film's success led to roles in a series of televised films for Disney Channel and Freaky Friday in 2003. The sleeper hit Mean Girls (2004) affirmed Lohan’s status as a rising star. However, after starring in the 2005 film Herbie: Fully Loaded, she quickly became the subject of intense media coverage following a series of personal struggles and legal issues, many of them driving-related. Stints in rehabilitation facilities and negative publicity resulted in the loss of several roles, significantly impacted her career, and tarnished her public image.
19 Simon Cowell, Lauren Silverman, and Bentley
Simon Cowell is one of the highest paid personalities in the TV industry. Success with his programs American Idol, The X Factor, America’s Got Talent, and others have generated millions. His annual salary in 2017 was $95 million, and he has an estimated net worth of $550 million. However, he is rarely seen wearing anything other than a T-shirt! The owner of an exotic car collection including a Bugatti Veyron, a Rolls Royce Phantom, a Ferrari 458 Italia, and a Bentley Azure, perhaps he should consider occasionally wearing a coat and tie. In this photo, Cowell stops by an In-N-Out for a bite to eat with Lauren Silverman in San Diego, California—wearing a T-shirt, of course.
18 Patrick Dempsey Drives a Porsche 997 GT3 RS
Patrick Dempsey gives a “thumbs up” when he realizes he is being photographed getting into his Porsche 997 GT3 RS in the parking lot of Easton Gym in Los Angeles. The photo was taken just prior to the opening of the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing in 2008. Dempsey said, “For a family to get a cancer diagnosis is devastating, and all the information out there can be overwhelming, so I talked to my sister about a place where people could go for all this type of information and help. Knowledge is power.” The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing, run by Dempsey’s sister, provides free support, education, and wellness services to anyone impacted by cancer.
17 Floyd Mayweather and the Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita
The 2010 Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita boasts 1,018 horsepower, allowing it to reach a speed of 254 mph and making it one of the fastest cars in the world. Only two were ever made, and one was owned by boxing champ Floyd "Money" Mayweather. He was spotted here, arriving at the Mayweather Boxing Club in Las Vegas in 2015. According to the Koenigsegg website, the company developed a unique coated fiber solution for the Trevita that transformed the body’s black carbon fibers into "a sparkling, silvery white," which "shines like millions of diamonds when the sun hits the car." The Trevita was recently sold at auction in Monterey, California, for a cool $2.8 million. Mayweather has moved on to other exotic supercars.
16 Danielle Lloyd Hires Lamborghini Huracán as Valentine’s Day Gift
The English glamour model, former Miss Great Britain, and Miss England, Danielle Lloyd shunned the traditional Valentines’ Day gifts that usually include a heart-filled greeting card along with a box of chocolates, opting instead for a more extravagant option. She chose to rent a stunning, red Lamborghini for her partner (much less expensive than buying one and easier to dispose of if the relationship goes sour). In this photo, Danielle seemed to have no difficulty exiting the supercar, while her beau struggles to climb out. On social media she wrote, “I got Balmain he got a ‘Lambo,’ happy valentines @fitzroviacars.” Lamborghini is now the most sought-after supercar in the rental-car market.
15 Jay Leno Buys a McLaren P1
Jay Leno was the first person outside of McLaren to drive the new P1 supercar. Here, he examines the bright yellow model he ordered, just one of only 375 P1s produced. Priced from $1.15 million, the supercar is a plug-in hybrid capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in under 3.0 seconds, flying past 124 mph in under 7.0 seconds, and exceeding 186 mph in no more than 17 seconds. The exotic sports car is electronically limited to a maximum velocity of 217.5 mph. The plug-in hybrid allows owners to charge their P1s at home and drive short distances on electric power alone. When the car’s twin-turbocharged, 3.8-liter V8 is engaged, the combined output is an astounding 903 horsepower and 663 lb-ft of torque.
14 Paris Hilton All White
Best known as the socialite heir to the Hilton Hotel fortune, Paris Hilton is a fashion designer, model, television personality, singer, actress, and businesswoman as well. She is also an exotic car enthusiast, the owner of more than a dozen luxury and supercars, including her famous pink Bentley. Hilton's Barbie-themed $400,000 Bentley Continental GT is one of the most expensive automobiles in its class. The personalized model features pink upholstery and a diamond-encrusted dashboard. In this photograph, Hilton is caught exiting her shiny white Lexus LFA, color coordinated with all-white attire, white-framed sunglasses, and purse. Well aware that she is photographed everywhere in public, she is always prepared. However, in this photo, she overlooked one accessory: her cell phone lacks a white cover. Oh well, nobody is perfect.
13 Chris Brown Drives His Customized "Jet Fighter" Lamborghini Gallardo
R&B singer Chris Brown was photographed in downtown Los Angeles driving his custom Lamborghini Gallardo sports car with an Air Force-themed look based on the legendary F-86 Sabre fighter aircraft. The custom paint job includes specially painted-on rivets along each of the luxury car’s panels and small victory symbols on the sides of planes. It’s not clear if the symbols represent victories in races with other sports cars or merely an attempt to add some authenticity to the jet fighter look-alike. Brown’s customized Lamborghini was a treat to himself for his first number one album, and his taste in car customization appears to match his taste in clothing.
12 Alec Baldwin Dispute Over a Parking Space
Alec Baldwin was unaware the Paparazzi were close by when he began a dispute with a man over a parking space in Manhattan—or perhaps, he just didn’t care. The actor has made headlines with incidents of public rage on several occasions and fought with a fellow New Yorker. He was then arrested on charges of assault and harassment. The event was captured on camera by multiple witnesses. With the propagation of good-quality photo and video capabilities on cell phones, celebrities these days must be concerned about exposure by more than just the paparazzi. Baldwin, who has presidential aspirations and has challenged the Donald—as well as Robert DeNiro, Joe Biden, and Mickey Rourke—to a fistfight, may want to reconsider after his less than impressive performance against a hapless stranger.
11 Jessica Alba Runs Errands in Her Audi Q7 TDI
Misbehaving badly in public and giving the paparazzi material for selling articles in scandal publications is not an option for Jessica Alba. Photos taken of her in public show the life of a typical mom (with the exception that she has a lot more money than most moms). Here she is seen talking to one of the three children who sits in her Audi Q7 TDI. For most celebrity moms, their choice of vehicles generally falls into one of three categories: luxury models, SUVs, or green cars (hybrids or diesels). Jessica chose the larger Audi, a diesel-fueled crossover with seating for seven.
10 Angelina Jolie Photographed Taking a Selfie with a Police Officer
Surveys show that more than 70% of Americans believe celebrities get special treatment. From favored seating at theaters to special tables at restaurants, celebrities are treated as preferred customers everywhere they go. Their special privileges also apply to the legal system. According to Andrea Peyser of the New York Post, a study of court cases in New York City shows leniency toward famous people that is not awarded to the average citizen. In this photo, a police officer was caught taking a selfie with Angelina Jolie. If her car was pulled over for a traffic violation, chances are the officer let her go with just a warning.
9 David Beckham and His Ferrari Spider
David Beckham is one of the best-known soccer (or former soccer) players in the world. His success as a player has earned him an exorbitant income. His net worth is estimated at more than £339 million ($430 million). The father-of-four, who is married to fashion designer Victoria Beckham, has spent a part of his fortune collecting cars. Beckham’s collection spans decades, with models ranging from vintage Aston Martins to high-end Rolls-Royces. A photographer took this photo of Beckham refueling his Ferrari Spider before he covered nearly his entire body with tattoos. The wool hat gives him some anonymity, although it is difficult to stay inconspicuous driving an exotic car.
8 Eddie Murphy, Coffee, and His Black Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano
Eddie Murphy is an accomplished comedian, actor, screenwriter, and film producer who was a regular cast member on Saturday Night Live from 1980 to 1984. He has been ranked number 10 on Comedy Central's list of the 100 Greatest Stand-ups of All Time. Accustomed to being photographed, Murphy had no idea the paparazzi were stocking him when this photo was taken. Otherwise, he probably wouldn’t have parked his Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano in a spot designated for compact cars. Ferrari's most expensive offering in 2011 (at $330,000), the limited-production 599 GTB Fiorano featured an aluminum-construction, front-engine V-12. Ferrari claimed the supercar could accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in under 3.3 seconds and reach a top speed of over 208 mph. That is plenty of speed to get Murphy to the gym for his workout and Starbucks afterward for his coffee.
7 Gordon Ramsay Directs His Sous Chef by Cell Phone
In 2018, England’s Channel 4 compiled a selection of Gordon Ramsay’s kitchen meltdowns and circulated it online. It was three minutes of the over-the-top celebrity chef hurling insults at various chefs and restaurant owners who, for unexplainable reasons, decided to subject themselves to his bullying and abuse. Most industry professionals question why such poor programming still gets airtime today in an era when chefs agree that there’s no place for tyrants, barbarians, or as Anthony Bourdain once stated, “meathead” chefs in the kitchen. When Ramsay is in public, as seen in this photo with his Ferrari, he has no worries about the paparazzi photographing some bad behavior. What could be any worse than his on-screen antics?
6 Kanye West with His New Lamborghini Aventador in Beverly Hills
Most days go well for Kanye West, like this day when he was photographed getting into his new Lamborghini Aventador in Beverly Hills. West is a successful rapper, songwriter, singer, entrepreneur, record producer, and fashion designer, and he is married to renowned socialite Kim Kardashian. However, just like most of us, there are times when circumstances could be better. Back in 2013, Kayne was caught on camera when he stumbled into a New York street sign that ironically read: “Caution: Watch for Pedestrians.” He had less than kind words for the photographers recording the event. Just days later, things got worse, when West learned that his $750,000 Lamborghini Aventador had been filmed being crushed by Kim Kardashian's electric gates as it was delivered to her Los Angeles house following a trip to a mechanic for maintenance.
5 Kylie Minogue Parks Her Maserati GranTurismo
Singer and actress Kylie Ann Minogue, also known simply as Kylie, has achieved remarkable commercial success and critical acclaim in the entertainment industry. Often called the “Princess of Pop,” she is recognized by the Australian Recording Industry Association as the highest-selling Australian artist of all time. By 2015, Minogue had worldwide record sales exceeding 80 million. She began her career starring as tomboy mechanic Charlene Robinson in the Australian soap opera Neighbours. It seems appropriate that Kylie would appreciate high-performance automobiles. Her personal transportation choice is the Maserati GranTurismo, a car that possesses the best in the tradition of opulent car manufacturing.
4 Ellen DeGeneres Loves Porsches
Ellen DeGeneres loves to drive fast and she loves Porsches. On a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, DeGeneres explains one of her driving pet-peeves: passing slower drivers, only to end up next to them at a stoplight. She confessed to Kimmel that she's a fast driver, stating that she drives "a little bit above the suggested limit" but justifies the higher speed contending that some speed limits are just too low. DeGeneres also talked about the time she was pulled over for doing 35 mph in a 30-mph zone. The police officer didn't realize who she was until she handed him her driver's license. He put his ticket book away and thanked Ellen for doing a lot of good for the world.
3 Magic Johnson’s Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupé
As of March 2017, the estimated net worth of retired professional basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson Jr. exceeded $500 million. This remarkable sum ranks him as one of the most successful athletes after retirement. Magic played point guard for the Los Angeles Lakers for 13 seasons and is considered one of the best to have ever played the game. However, you don’t have to be a basketball fan to love Magic Johnson. That enormous, infectious, and completely disarming smile—that melts the stoniest of hearts at the very first encounter—is visible in almost every photo taken of the star. Even in this photo driving his Phantom Drophead Coupe, where Johnson is caught off-guard, he still displays a slight smile.
2 Ryan Gosling, Eva Mendes, and Toyota Prius
Ryan Gosling is a cool customer. Winner of numerous awards and nominated for an Academy Award as best actor for his roles in La La Land and Half Nelson, who can forget him playing the role of playboy Jacob Palmer in the film, Crazy, Stupid, Love? Maybe it was his was $2,125 Albert Hammond Jr. two-piece suit or the $385 “Chad” sunglasses in Auburn Tortoise colorway from Selima Optique, but he looked like a million bucks. However, Gosling looks good even when he wears just a T-shirt and drives his eco-friendly Toyota Prius with girlfriend, Eva Mendes, to Starbucks for a cappuccino. Most likely, Gosling had no idea he was being photographed, but he probably didn’t care.
1 Mr. Bean Goes to the Grocery Store in His £200,000 Supercar
Rowan Atkinson (better known as Mr. Bean) set a record for the highest repair bill ever recorded in Britain with his successful insurance claim in the amount of £910,000 to fix his McLaren. Atkinson had crashed it into a tree in 2011, which led to unconfirmed speculation that he purchased a more conservative Skoda. However, his taste for exotic supercars didn’t change. Here is photographed with his gleaming, gullwing, £200,000 Mercedes SLS AMG after a trip to the supermarket. The 59-year-old millionaire actor (net worth as of 2019 is estimated to be $130 million) required his torso to be as flexible as his famously rubbery face to lower himself into the two-seater.
