The 1920s was a decade closely related to some of the world's most classic cars. It was a decade of firsts in the automotive world, such as with the first anti-lock brake system and the initial launch of sufficient windscreens. It is a decade to be remembered for many great cars. But what brands topped the lot in the (previous) twenties?

Similar to now, many manufacturers were trying to make the best cars. There might not have been as many, but there were a fair few. From the likes of Ford to Rolls-Royce and the failed company Duesenberg, let's take a look at the world's top car brands of the 1920s.

Here is a deeper look into the best car brands in the world during the 1920s and why they were so great.

Rolls-Royce was probably the most well-known car manufacturer during the 1920 decade. Offering some of the most expensive cars on the market at the time, this is what made them one of the world's most popular car brands during the first half of the interwar period. Their cars were so expensive that most manufacturers couldn't compete against them when it came to profits.

The audience of Rolls-Royce was very much the upper class. Anyone who could afford the most expensive cars could enjoy the likes of the 1920 Phantom Limousine and the 1928 Sport Phantom.

The reason for the British luxury car manufacturer being one of the world's best during this decade was due to their sheer commitment to building great cars and the world loved them. They helped during the war and they are still highly-valued and loved cars today. Getting your hands on an original from the 1920s would be expensive but so worth it.

Ford

Another British car manufacturer that mastered the 1920s was Ford. However, they were one of the greatest for a very different reason to Rolls-Royce. They were a company that liked to produce affordable cars for the masses.

Ford saw a rapid increase in sales during the 1920s and was again, another manufacturer who helped out during the war. Hence, they gained huge trust and love from fans all over the world. Henry Ford and the Ford Motor Company produced new and better models every year during this decade, hence why they were one of the best in the world at the time. They increased wages and lowered the cost of vehicles through mass production, which made their cars increasingly affordable.

Their Ford Model T is considered the first affordable automobile from the brand, which was first released in 1908. However, a remodel called the Model TT was released in the 1920s to celebrate the success and adoration of the original.

Chrysler

The 1920s appeared to be a difficult decade for smaller and more independent car makers, as big names were more trustworthy and therefore, worth the money post-war. However, Chrylser managed to become one of the world's greatest car manufacturers of the 1920s even though he was a much smaller name in the market. Walter P. Chrysler was fascinated with cars ever since his first $5,000 ride, the Locomobile. He quickly became obsessed with his car and soon took it upon himself to make cars for other people to be obsessed with.

Before he created his own business, Walter worked for GM and retired. However, he became restless and went on to produce one of the most popular of the 1920 cars, the Chrysler Six. The Six was a car equipped with a new high-compression engine, which helped him become competitive against the likes of Ford and his previous company, General Motors.

Duesenberg

Although Duesenberg is now non-existent, they were a huge hit in the 1920s. They became a worldwide car manufacturer thanks to producing the fastest car of the decade, namely the Model J. During this area, companies were competing to create a car that would be the world-best, the fastest, powerful, biggest, and most luxurious car to ever be made, which Duesenberg managed to pull out of the bag.

In the 1930s, Duesenberg went under due to The Great Depression. Sadly, they never managed to recuperate. However, they still hold a dear place in the hearts of those that either experienced one or love outstanding vintage cars.

The Duesenberg Model J featured a 7-liter Duesenberg Straight-8 engine, with an optional supercharger, which could top speeds of 119 mph and had a maximum output of 265 hp. For the time, these performance figures were unheard of. Therefore, the brand had to be on the list of the world's greatest car brands of the decade.

In our opinion, the 1920s was just the very beginning of the greatest car history. Although cars had been around, there was nothing quite like the Duesenberg Model J and Rolls-Royce models. They shone in all their glory at the time and are still thought about and much-loved today.
