We all know Top Gear. The popular BBC TV show has gone through many iterations over the last few years, but has now found an even footing with Chris Harris, Freddie Flintoff, and Paddy McGuiness. Away from those three, the Top Gear web team regularly upload car reviews and reports onto the show's website. This is the Mercedes-AMG A45 S, one of the best high-performance cars to come from the three-pointed star in recent years. And quite a fun car as it turns out.

Drifting Around

Reporter Ollie Marriage, says that he “admires AMG’s dedication to daftness due to the fact that this car has the ability to skid around corners and do all sorts of crazy things. It  actually has a drift mode. Yeah, a hatchback with a drift mode. It's pretty wild really. And it's fun too, given that it produces a rather wild 415 hp, and goes from 0-60 in just 3.9 seconds. We know Mercedes produces good cars, and for fun, this is certainly one of the best.

But that’s not the car's only party piece, oh no. This AMG comes with a fantastic 4-wheel drive system. Ollie reports that the car has a mechanical diff at the front, but not at the rear. The rear instead sports very sophisticated clutch packs, sending up to 100% of the car's rear torque through either of the rear wheels. This leads to that fantastic bit of drifting fun we mentioned before.

A Hot Family Car

via Top Gear

But let's not beat about the bush too much. This, at the end of the day, is still very much a family car but with a bit more of an edge to it. This is not a boring Nissan Altima or bog-standard Audi. This is in essence a hot hatchback. And I think, as Ollie mentions in his report, we have to admire AMG for producing such a fun car when it could have been something pretty standard instead. Oh, and what about the economy? This car can do around 32.5 miles per gallon. Not great, not terrible. But you are going to have lots of fun, in a car you can use every day and that’s all that matters.
