Toyota is celebrating 60 (well, 61) years of the Land Cruiser by releasing a Heritage Edition with a big V8 engine.

The Land Cruiser, Toyota’s big, full-size SUV, has been around in the United States since 1958. To celebrate this remarkable achievement of making big, V8-powered SUVs, Toyota USA is making a special edition of their big, V8-powered SUV. Because who couldn’t use a little more V8 power?

In general, the Heritage Edition land cruiser is a top of the line trim with a few exclusive exterior aesthetic elements. The outer Midnight Black Metallic or Blizzard Pearl paint job is not unique to the Heritage Edition, but the black-accented grille and darkened headlight housings certainly are. The fog light surrounds have also been toned down and the side mirrors now have dark accents to go with the Land Cruiser’s new goth look.

A set of BBS 18-inch forged aluminum wheel are painted bronze and given the Toyota cap, while the running boards and chrome lower body side moldings are deleted.

Under the hood is the same 5.7-L DOHC V8 that every Land Cruise enjoys which produces 381 hp and 402 lb-ft of torque. Max towing is 8,100 lbs thanks to full-time 4WD and an 8-speed automatic transmission. A TORSEN limited-slip locking center diff combines with a 2-speed transfer case with low range and a bunch of software modes including downhill assist, hill start assist, and Toyota’s crawl control to make this the most capable off-road Toyota SUV ever made.

If that’s not enough protection, an arsenal of skid plates keep the Land Cruiser’s delicate bits from getting punctured by a rock, while a multi-terrain monitor provides a nearly 360-degree view of the surrounding area.

On the inside, the Heritage Edition gets heated and vented seats, a heated steering wheel, moonroof, and 4-zone climate control to keep everyone comfy. A 9-inch infotainment controls a 14-speaker JBL audio system, and a full suite of driver assist technology includes emergency braking, lane departure, automatic cruise control, blind spot monitor, and rear cross traffic alert.

Production will be limited to 1,200 units, with pricing and availability to be announced at the Heritage Edition’s debut at the Chicago Auto Show.
