Toyota is a bit of a latecomer in the growing electric vehicle arena. Nevertheless, it is entering the game with an onslaught of seven all-electric bZ models by the middle of the decade. Toyota has kicked off its new lineup with the unveiling of the new bZ4X electric SUV, which will hit the United States market this spring.

The unveiling of the GR Corolla somehow overshadowed the launch of the very first bZ model. Nevertheless, the all-electric bZ4X is important to Toyota as it marks the carmaker’s commitment to a carbon-neutral future, in style.

Toyota’s new bZ SUV essentially looks like the Subaru Solterra EV. This is primarily because the bZ4X shares the same platform (e-TNGA) with the Solterra. Aside from the front section, badges, and other minor exterior details, the bZ4X has the same trapezoidal design, character lines, silhouette, and overall futuristic aesthetics.

The bZ4X has the “4” in its name like the RAV4, indicating that it belongs to the same segment. Dimension-wise, the bZ4X is longer by 3.4 inches than the RAV4, with a wheelbase measuring 112.2 inches. It is also lower and wider than the RAV4.

Toyota will offer the new bZ4X in two grades, XLE and Limited. Both come available in Front-Wheel Drive and All-Wheel Drive versions. The bZ4X apparently shares the same electric powertrain with the Solterra. The FWD version with a 71.4-kWh battery pack delivers 201 hp of output and 196 lb-ft of torque. The AWD model with a 72.8-kWh battery pack is more powerful and capable at 214 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque.

Performance-wise, the bZ4X FWD can zoom from zero to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds, while the AWD version can complete the same sprint quicker in 6.5 seconds.

The bZ4X's range is relatively disappointing. The XLE FWD has an EPA-estimated range rating of around 252 miles while its AWD counterpart has a rating of just 228 miles. Rival SUVs such as the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and VW ID.4 can go farther. Likewise, the bZ4X’s charging time is slower than its rivals.

Thanks to its long wheelbase and the BEV-dedicated platform, the bZ4x offers a spacious cabin with ample legroom for both front and rear seats. The interior features piano-black parts, with the Limited grade employing a satin material. More interior color, material, and equipment options – such a JBL Premium Audio system – are available.
