It isn't a secret that Toyota (along with Subaru) is now developing the next-generation Toyota 86 – the GR 86. We don’t know when the next-gen 86 will arrive, but Toyota's latest limited edition of the sports car could be the last hurrah for the current generation. This is the new 2020 Toyota 86 GT Black Limited.

The current Toyota 86 does owe its pop star status to the Toyota AE86 of the 1980s. Well, the AE86 also became a celebrity thanks to the Initial D anime series, in which the main protagonist Takumi Fujiwara drives a 1983 Toyota Sprinter Trueno in GT Apex trim. But even before it rose to TV stardom, the AE86 was already popular among rally and circuit racers.

Eventually, Toyota had to discontinue the AE86. Toyota essentially signaled the end of its beloved sports car by unveiling a special edition – the AE86 GT Black Limited – in January 1986. As its name says, the AE86 GT Black Limited was dark all over, with some contrasting elements (wheels and pinstripes) in gold.

Back to the present, the current-generation Toyota 86 will soon hit a watershed moment. Making a move similar to what it did in 1986, the Japanese carmaker intends to signal the generational exodus with the new 2020 Toyota 86 GT Black Limited. Both editions were on full display at the 2020 Tokyo Auto Salon in January; we just failed to notice them as the GR Yaris was hogging all the attention.

Just like the AE86 GT Black Edition, the 86 GT Black Edition features a black exterior and interior, as contrasted by a number of golden or bronze elements inside and out. For instance, the 86 GT Black Edition rides on 17-inch bronze wheels with ventilated Brembo brakes and features the Black Limited logo (in gold) on the dashboard. If you want to, you can also option gold pinstripes on your 86 Black Edition.

Other elements include a trunk lid spoiler, SACHS shock absorbers and perforated front seats. Toyota made no mention of a power increase. The carmaker is building just 86 examples and all are bound for the Japanese Domestic Market. The 86 GT Black Limited is priced at JPY 3,518,000, with orders being accepted until April 16 at the Toyota Gazoo Racing website.
