Toyota has pulled off quite an amazing feat with the GR Yaris homologation special. You see, there's a reason why there hasn't been a new pure rally-bred performance car coming out lately. The latest regulations in the WRC say that you have to build 25,000 road-going examples to meet homologation rules, and that's simply a tall order, considering you have to find homes for every single one of those, and of course, the amount of investment required would be astronomical. But not with Toyota.

In an SUV and crossover-dominated world of automobiles today, Toyota made a bold move to release a hot hatch homologation special and did so successfully, considering how the GR Yaris has been largely celebrated as a refreshing sight for the modern times. Turns out, Toyota isn't done making the GR Yaris ever-better, as they've just revealed the GRMN Yaris that caters more to everyone's motorsports needs. Let's check out some of its secrets.

Toyota was one of the Japanese manufacturers who showed some of the sickest cars in the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon. Together with the GR GT3 Concept, the GRMN Yaris was the result of Toyota's use of motorsports to make exciting cars for the road.

The fully-tuned GRMN Yaris went through rigorous refinement with the help of professional drivers, and even Morizo himself. Unlike the standard GR model, the GRMN Yaris is now strictly a two-seater hot hatch, as the rear seats have been removed in favor of a rear shock tower bar that doubles up as a reinforcement brace.

Furthermore, the presence of Alcantara upholstery in the black and red interior is much more profound in the new GRMN Yaris especially in the steering wheel, where it was previously wrapped in leather, and now sports a red center stripe.

7 Weight Diet

According to Toyota, the new GRMN Yaris was able to shed approximately 44 lbs over the standard model. That's mainly due to the removal of the rear seats, and usage of lightweight high-rigidity carbon (twill weave CFRP) for the new hood, roof, and rear spoiler.

Further weight savings were achieved when the standard reclinable GR seats were swapped in favor of bespoke Recaro full bucket seats with side airbags. The car now sits 10mm lower, while its overall width has been increased by 10mm, giving it a lower center of gravity.

6 Drivetrain Upgrades

There were also some subtle but significant changes in the GRMN Yaris that unlock more performance from the three-cylinder turbo hot hatch. Power stays the same at 268 hp, but it now has more torque at 288 ft-lbs compared to the standard model which has 273 ft-lbs.

In addition, a stronger close-ratio six-speed manual transmission has been fitted to the GRMN Yaris along with a lower final drive ratio to improve acceleration and stay in the 1.6-liter turbo's powerband, while the Torsen limited-slip differential has been replaced in favor of a mechanical LSD.

5 Circuit Package

In addition to the GRMN Yaris, Toyota gives customers the option to upgrade to either the Circuit Package or the Rally Package. Pictured in the Platinum White Pearl Mica color is the Circuit Package, which focuses on road performance based on feedback from the Super Taikyu series.

The Circuit Package includes BBS GRMN-dedicated 18-inch wheels on 18-inch brakes, Bilstein shock absorbers with adjustable damping force along with the carbon rear spoiler, side skirt, and lip spoiler.

4 Rally Package

The Rally Package features fewer exterior upgrades as it only comes with the standard rear spoiler seen on the standard GR Yaris, but has specific parts meant to increase the GRMN Yaris' durability and safety on the rally stages.

There is a GR roll bar together with a sidebar for added protection inside, while a GR under guard set takes care of protecting the car's undercarriage. Lastly, the Rally Package has a GR shock absorber with a short stabilizer link set.

It will also come with Toyota's new Update Program and Personalization Program services, which could tailor the GRMN Yaris' handling characteristics to meet its driver's needs. These updates and refinements will be conducted exclusively in Toyota's GR Garage.

2 The Bad News

Here comes the bad news - the Toyota GRMN Yaris is exclusive to the Japanese market. Plus, it's not gonna be sold on a first-come, first-served basis, as interested buyers will have to sign up for a web lottery that will last until the end of February.

This means, only the winners of the web lottery will be allowed to purchase the vehicle around spring 2022, and will be subject to the aforementioned Update and Personalization Program services to tailor fit their brand-new GRMN Yaris.

1 The Good News
