According to the Australian comparison website CompareTheMarket, Toyota was, for the second consecutive year, the world’s most searched car brand. Results were compiled according to the website's annual analysis of Google Trends data which have shown that the Japanese car manufacturer has been the top search term in 47 out of 154 countries in the year 2021.

It has been four years that Compare The Market has been publishing the report, and Toyota has held the top spot for three of those, in 2018, 2020, and now 2021. German marques BMW and Mercedes-Benz have both remained consistent podium contenders over the years, but only BMW could snatch the top spot from Toyota in 2019. Since then, the mammoth manufacturer Toyota has held a close grasp on the top spot.

While Toyota represented 31% of all searches in 2021, searches, in general, have declined from 35% in 2020 while for other brands, their searches gained momentum. In 2019, when BMW took the top spot, it became the most searched brand in 118 countries, which secured an impressive lead for the German automaker. Mercedes, which is currently sitting in third for 2021, managed to close the gap by 70%, only six countries behind second place. Audi has improved as well, they've more than doubled their number of countries as top searches.

Toyota's Total Success

Toyota proved to be extremely popular in major countries including Russia, their native Japan, Mongolia, Australia, and also regions across Southeast Asia and in ten African countries and large parts of South America. BMW saw most of its searches occur in Europe, while unsurprisingly, other brands like Ford and Nissan proved to be wildly popular in North America.

Toyota’s reign could be easily explained by the announcement Toyota Gazoo Racing made about reproducing spare parts for Corolla Levin and Sprinter Trueno. But despite the Initial-D loving AE86 enthusiasts chomping at the bit to get their hands on some newly produced parts, 2021 was especially busy for Toyota.

This year, they've launched a suite of vehicles including its first full line-up of electric vehicles, the world’s first Corolla SUV, and a completely redesigned Toyota Land Cruiser. It's also important to note that the GR Yaris has taken the Hot Hatch market by storm and firmly secured its place in the homologation specials category alongside other legends like the Audi Quattro and Renault 5 GT Turbo. Not to forget the announcement of the GR Corolla and plenty of hype still surrounding the new-gen Supra too, Toyota has plenty to offer and clearly, there are plenty of people looking for it too, and as they announce plans to electrify their entire fleet, there are no signs of their popularity depleting.
